I don't remember the paper packet ones myself Mick (although I think we are the same age?).
Where I grew up in the 80s was caster country (Bedfordshire Great Ouse) and I only got on to the 90340 when Dave Harrell and others started writing about them in Dave Hall's magazines in the very late 80s. I didn't really fish maggot as a primary bait until practising for the 1989 div 3 national on the Trent.
We were coached by Tony Barker for that match - it was really nice to see him again at Caythorpe on saturday just gone.

VMC special caster (fine wire - same shape as series 2) and mustad 39853 (forged round bends) were my favourite patterns in the 80s.

The one I'm on right now is the Guru QM1. It a great pellet hook and so strong it beggars believe. I'm guessing the extra strength is by design, but I've had some big carp on a size 18s.

I also like the Guru MWG in a 14s for paste, strong too.

I tried some of the maggot hooks from Guru last year for roach 16s 18s and found them excellent. A nice light wide hook, but strong enough for the odd bream too.

Whats yours right now?
I like the QM1 but I struggle to get them out. Currently working through a pack of kaisan

That specific tool makes it easier but after a while of using QM1's I have found that they easily come out with your fingers. It's just a matter of the correct technique. I Hardly ever use the disgorger now.
