I don't remember the paper packet ones myself Mick (although I think we are the same age?).
Where I grew up in the 80s was caster country (Bedfordshire Great Ouse) and I only got on to the 90340 when Dave Harrell and others started writing about them in Dave Hall's magazines in the very late 80s. I didn't really fish maggot as a primary bait until practising for the 1989 div 3 national on the Trent.
We were coached by Tony Barker for that match - it was really nice to see him again at Caythorpe on saturday just gone.
VMC special caster (fine wire - same shape as series 2) and mustad 39853 (forged round bends) were my favourite patterns in the 80s.
