My last club
Hi all, Ive just joined a new club, the last I need I hope. Youve seen me post several stretches of other clubs, so you may be wondering what on earth I need another for?
So heres why.

The Club is called PAD and stands for Practical Angling for the Disabled.

I had never heard of it and found it as follows.

John ESOX, when teaching me Pike Fishing had introduced me to a bait additive supplier and a specialist Angler called Archie Braddock.
Now Archie has a website to sell his products, but it is also packed with tips and a fascinating (to me) diary.
This diary, details Archies fishing around this area and the search for large barbel Chub and Perch.
Packed with tips, I was engrossed by it and E-Mailed Archie asking if he could help me by suggesting club books, where I too could pursue such methods and hope to find such fish.
I hoped that, as Stewart Bloor had so kindly helped me, perhaps Archie would do the same.
Sure enough, he sent a nice reply and finally suggested that as I was disabled, I contacted Mark, the Bailiff of the PAD club, who may have a vacancy. (They are restricted to 25 members) and he described their superb 20-peg stretch of the river.
He didnt mention that he was the President, or that Mark the Bailiff was none other than Mark, who is his companion in many of his fishing trips, or even that the trip to a disabled clubs fishery reported in his diary of July 5th 2000 was 1 and the same!

http://www.braddocksbaits.co.uk/index.html

Heres the link to his website
As I read through the diary I began to really admire this dedicated hunt for large fish. so when I contacted Mark, who in turn passed me on to Barry Poxon, the knowledgeable chairman and finally Norman , the Treasurer who assessed my eligibility, I gleaned a little more each time of Archies involvement with the club.
Being qualified, I now had to be accepted and frustratingly, I was away, firstly in Ireland and secondly in America for the first 2 of the monthly meetings (2nd Monday each month) where it was necessary for me to attend, if I wished to gain a place.
So I found out more.
Archie had replaced Ian Heaps as President and had not only fallen in love with the waters, but describes how to fish them and what you are likely to catch.
Also, he does not oversell his products. A true story, he often speaks of disappointments, blanks, despair even, silly happenings, like the time he throws out his keepnet, forgetting that he had not secured the bankstick (How zippylike!)
A real Angler and an exciting read,

As I realised June 5th 2000 was the start of it all, I began to find more and more visits, with more and more methods and fish catches, Bad days also, but that is rain and rivers!
Datafile.jpg

Throughout the year, Archie returns to the upper Trent with Mark, Roger or on his own.
By June2001 he practically lives there, fishing Tiny Lake on 10th and 14th, the river later on.
Tiny lake is the lake on the PAD stretch, where I describe catching 5 pike on the spinners.
Datafile.jpg

7 Pike in a session to livebait? This whilst fishing a 2nd rod.
His biggest Trent Perch 3lbs 5 ozs, smashed by barbel and pike!
Can you wonder that I wished to join this club
I told Dave of my find and he visited the site and was so impressed that he awarded Archie the Maggotdrowners Top site award. and Archie was so pleased that in his Summary of March 2002 He announces his pride that his wife has won such an award. from us!
15 days later, the end of the season and he announces the capture of 34 Perch over 3lb, from local waters and some from where I can invite you to fish!
No one has ever reported anywhere near this total before.
I have never even seen a 3lb Perch!
So the club offers me
a) safe easy access with a first class chance of catching good fish.
b) A close season lake

c) A 20match series on good waters for 1.50 per match.

d) Help and advice

e) Access to cheap supplies of bait and more importantly

f) We have reciprocal guest, or concession tickets to several other waters and as we are disabled, qualify for taking a helper along too.
Thus, instead of having to suss out a day ticket water for any of my MD friends, I can take anyone I want to such places as Mallory Park, Kegworth Soar and Crystal lake, Marstons, Swannington and others of which I am yet unsure, all FOC guys, so if you want a day.on a new water with me, just phone my friend.
Now the club was also so impressed with the speed that we had responded to Granddad Phils request for help for his Grandson, that on hearing Nick was bringing the final pieces of kit from Bedford to him, refused to let me take Nick on Tiny lake, but instead presented me with 2 day tickets for Marstons where , on his last visit ,Mark had 31 carp to 18lbs So I hope Nick and I score.

g) Finally, the club was prepared to grant me the whole site for a weekend, if you wished to join me for a fish-in. With true open generosity and support like this, it puts in perspective the childish jealousy and animosity, I have faced recently.

What did all this cost?
A joining fee of 10.00 and 30.00 for the 20 match series at 1.50 per head.
Incidentally, last year, they were awarded a grant for protective clothing. As I missed this, they presented me with a PAD branded Umbrella, made to a design that retails at 49.95!
Value for money? I think so.

So, I feel very lucky and I hope that any of you wishing for a days free fishing with me, will allow me to share that luck.
I hope many of you will join me on the fish in and read Archies Diaries and get anticipation of what you may catch and what methods to use.
If you buy any of his products and ESOX and I do, mention Maggotdrowners.

Dont feel that excited that you wish to swap places though, you have to prove disability (and flu or ingrowing toenails are hardly life threatening!) AND it is the only club I have joined that asks you for an EA licence. Although the EA is one body that hasnt helped them!
YET!

The knowledge within the club is considerable.
Their concern for me and those like me, to avoid stress is remarkable, unlike other people, who go out of their way to cause stress, even knowing the facts.
I am pleased and proud to be a part of this new team, some almost blind, others in wheelchairs, but as happy a crowd as you could meet, and invite you all to share them with me.

Cheers

Trev.

Trev, I'm certain that you are getting no more than you deserve with this new club.
Also it is a real pleasure to hear of "a name"realy putting something back into fishing without the lure of 's. Good on you Archie.

Del.

Not fishing? Then talk to your friends on MDs.

Trevor what a wonderful write up for what is undoubtedly a wonderful club, as for your invite I think you know my response, I have told you often enough lol. as for the website and diary I have put it in my favorites file and will look forward to a good read.

Its a great shame that there are not many more clubs like this one (there certainly is not one here in South Wales) as there are a great many people who could benefit.

Dai, I couldnt agree more with you, more should be done for the disabled.
I am surprised the EA dont do anything, but they let the healthy buy their licence over the Internet and force you and I to queue up at a Post Office to PROVE in front of everyone that we receive disability allowance!

Trev,

A good wright up on what sounds like a very good club for the Disabled anglers in your area.

And it's refreshing to hear that Archie (whose additives i've used for years) is so willing to support the PAD.

As you know i've been guesting on Rugby disabled matches recently and also helping Dirk by weighting in and being around if needed on his BDAA matches, and also trying to raise some fund's for the BDAA with my own series of matches.

It does not take much effort being an able bodied person to give a little help and support to those that need it.

I wish you all the success with the PAD in the future and i'll try my best to be able to attend THE ZIPPY FISH-IN when it takes place.

MALC,
I want you there for several reasons,
1) to bring Dirk to show us all how LOL
2) so I can nick the sandwiches you cant ever get round to eating and 3) somebody's gotta prepare the groundbait!
PS, The Bagging stick float is banned!LOL
Just hope it doesnt clash with a match, but its all weekend and before I forget, a lot of Archies exciting posts are about evening/night fishing!
Thats on too!
PS i'd got you figured for a helper for a decrepit ole Zip in the Lake in the trees at Mallory 1 day too!
Now theres a venue!

Your on with the help Trev i've heard some very good reports on that pool.

We will have to sort something out when you get back from Ireland.

Funny you should mention groundbait i've just mixed up a load for a match in the morning (4hr away) at Drayton with Rugby Disabled.

Trev - a write-up like that is always great to read. And a hearty "well done" to all those folks you mentioned. Sound like seriously good people to me.

I am still amazed though that you were able to convince the PAD folks that the Zippy Curse should count as a disability. icon_smile_big.gif
