I think it is probably a case of having less chance of moving the feeder (I always hear Timmy pickerings voice when I say that now) and being pointed direct you can, as others have said, sink the line quicker and keep the feeder still.

I still like a bit of a bend in the top (only slight) just to see any drop backs...obviously this is less of an issues when carp fishing in the summer for example
