Hi
I have recently got interested in the art of specimen hunting and this year have tried my best to get some. The closest i have come is 1 lb off a specimen size carp (my carp being a 19lb ghostie). Are there any web sites out there that you think will help me. My next target is a 2lb+ perch. I know a pit where they can be found but i need the tactics and bait please.

The best bait for large Perch is the good old Lobworm, floatfished or legered. Nipping the ends off the worm may help also, as causes the worms blood & guts to slowly ouze out into the water to help attract the fish.
Big Perch are usually solitary creatures, and don't shoal like the smaller ones do, so the best place to look for 'em is around structures around the side of the water.

You may find some useful advice @ http://www.esox.co.uk - Which is the website of top Norfolk piking guie Charlie Bettel (it also offers advice on Perch, Chub & Trout).

Piker,
What makes you think that a 19lb ghostie doesn't count as a specimen?
What's the largest carp in the water?
As a rough guide i would say that a specimen is 2/3rds of the weight of the largest fish in any fishery, thus if the largest carp is a 20lb fish, then a 14lb+ fish would be a specimen.
You can only catch what is in a fishery, Don't get too caught up with the weight and numbers game, cause you will only end up dissatisfied and end up chasing fish which may not be there.

A 19lb ghostie is a magnificent fish, and one that a large number of the posters on this site would i'm sure be only be to pleased to catch, I know i would.[:D]

Ditto, because i have never caught a ghostie at all.

Piker, I agree with Peter. Its far better to catch a fish that is above average weight for a water, than assume for example carp = 20lb before its a specimen.

chill out go fishing

As the name suggests,I love fishing for perch, but catching the big perch isnt easy, they can be quite frustrating. I fish a water which I know has 5Ib perch in it, you can catch plenty to 1Ib, but as mentioned, the bigger fish are quite different to the suicidal 3oz fish we know. Many a time I have gone full of optimism, and gone home gutted. Try a full lob with the tip chopped off, or a floatfished gudgeon or even a small perch.
Failing that make a trip to the great ouse! They seem to catch them there!

up north, I will happily tell you the water, but the chances of you catching these fish are slim!
Not so suprisingly, it's a commercial water, where these big perch have been neglected by people who would rather catch small carp, and have grown big and fat.
Its bradshaw fisheries, bolton. It's probably the least fished of all the lakes there, perhaps one or two will go on a week, either for the good silver fish sport, or somebody who thinks they can catch one of about 5 huge carp in there!

Theres no real proof of these fish though. Theres plenty of waters that have the potential and therefore rumours develop about them but they rarely produce.
It could well be possible there are 5lb perch in there but I'm very sceptical if no proof is provided.

Went to spain, paid 120euro and didnt get a nibble. Went to the clyde stuck on sum feathers, went out in a rubber dinghy and caught mackers and pollock til the sun went down.
