My lovely wife caught me completely on the hop today - I was sorting out some bits for this weekend and she noticed the bottle of Banoffee Haze in my bag which prompted her to ask why would I use a sweet additive when fish naturally feed in the silt on invertebrates so would surely be more attracted by fishy or meaty smells.

I genuinely could not proffer an explanation or reason other than I’ve always used sweet additives all year long and occasionally added turmeric to maggots on winter sessions for no other reason than I could but have always caught on them so didn’t question it.

Does anyone have any ideas why sweet attractants work so well for carp, roach & bream particularly ?

They eat blackberries, elderberries and raspberries that fall from bushes.
Dont imagine they taste food but detect chemical signals from food sources.

Of course - I was actually roach fishing with elderberries a few months ago
