My wife and daughter are desperate to drag me into the 20th century. My wife wants to watch films on the TV and to help her do this she needs to get something called a Netflix. I don't have one of those and I am informed that to get one I need to get a media streaming device. They did ask me if my TV was "smart", but I said "no, it's just black"
Any advice on which media device is best would be appreciated (y)
Netflix is a streaming service, the majority of Smart TVs have Netflix and youtube enabled, with netflix you have to subscribe costing £5.99 for the lowest service.

I have a firestick with Amazon Prime and other services installed and I can watch films and any TV show I want, nothing is streamed live so no need for a TV licence.

My TV is a Toshiba and the sound is good enough, and cannot see the point of a sound system .

Given that ended on 31st Dec 2000, you're probably already there!!!!! :)

As for the 21st century - the Firestick is good if you have the aforementioned HDMI port.
I think that was an accurate observation :D ;)
The idea of the 21st century is an unattainable dream.

Thanks to all who replied, Firestick just ordered from Amazon. When it gets here I will get it set up and see what we have and then see what else we need.

Makes you wonder why anyone would be bothered with a Sky subscription.
A couple of years ago I had a Kodi box, which was OK until it packed up, now we just have an old Sky box that gets the free to air programs, but not much choice.
Being in France may complicate the issue.

If you use a VPN you wont have any issues. I use Surf Shark cost about £2.00 a month well worth the money stops all the adds aswell.

Have a look at an IPTV subscription, lots available.

Re the streaming. Do you know what Internet speed you get ?? If it's too low, that won't help with the streaming.

Why would I want a sound bar HM, not sure? At £2.50 a week Netflix is ok for me.
With smart tv being so thin and made of plastic, small speakers with tiny drivers housed in plastic shells are used.
This results in tiny, vibrating sound with no depth or substance and a single point of focus as tv cannot project sound around room.
Sound bars have multiple speakers, some for treble, some for mid range, some for bass.
Decent sound bars have a separate sub woofer for bass and sub bass (wired or wireless) that can be hidden away (as bass frequency acts differently than mid/treble where sound needs to be directed).
Even bette sound bars have spatial speakers at each end that create surrond sound with out the need for surrond sound speakers (of old).
Took me ages to find a bar that fitted and looked right with a sensible sized TV as at time most were very long designed for super sized tvs.

I use one of these as small and compact yet has spatial, mid, treble and a separate sub speaker.
Worth every penny and runs off optical cable direct from tv (samsung).

Yeah I see what you mean rudd regarding how thin they are, how can they get a decent speaker inside such a small enclosure? I suppose mine will sound ok, until you hear it coming from better speakers. (y)

Don’t think you will regret getting the fire stick. We tried nowtv and roku before we settled on it and it’s the best so far.
