Using gravel in groundbait is fairly common in Europe to get the bait down to the bottom in fast flowing deep water, Sensas even sell it as an additive.
Similar idea to using molehill but in some cases people use Sticky mag to bind maggots with gravel to get a similar effect both to sink the bait and/or to give extra weight to catapult bait a further distance.

Never heard of it but that’s actually quite an inventive idea tbf. Whether it’s actually any more effective than a tightly packed groundbait ball laced with maggots or a bait dropper is debatable but it’s certainly not the worst idea.

You can also use mashed potato as a binder (no milk or butter in it) on deep fast rivers.
