Here are aome facts you may or may not know about Christmas.

1. Thanks to Pope Gregory we actually celebrate Christmas at the wrong time of year, December was the tenth month in the Julian calendar.

2. White Christmases in the UK have always been rare, and were invented by Charled Dickens as a way of expressing the cold months in his books.

3 Christians stole the pagan ritual of Yule, and many of its traditions bringing greenery into the home at "Yuletide" is a pagan ritual.

4. That Yule Log you eat is a symbol of the large log that was brought into the home to burn through the 12 days of Yule when no one worked

5. The 12 days of Christmas are again stolen, they were in fact the 12 days of Yule when no-one worked, farmers would only breifly tend their stock, it was a time for feasting and orgies

6. The days of Christmas are the days following Chriistmas day, Advent is the 24 days preceding Christmas Day

10. The Dutch Father Christmas arrives from Spain, not the North Pole.

11. In the UK Childrens letters addressed to "Santa/ Father Christmas Toyland" are opened by people employed by Royal Mail in London, every child gets a letter back if there is a reply addreess. If the letter is addressed to "Santa / Father Christmas North Pole" it goes to a town in Lapland, the most northerly inhabited place, and once again, all letters are replied to. This happens because the North Pole exists, Toyland doesn't. The replies are also written in the same language as the sent letter.

12 Rudolphs red nose is probably due to a parasitic infection of his respitory system.

13 The song "Jingle Bells" was written as a Thanksgiving song, and was titled “One Horse Open Sleigh” It was composed to celebrate the Medford Sleigh races, it was also the first song to be broadcast from space

14 Robins on Chrstmas cards started as joke, postmen used to wear red tunics and were called "robins"

15 It is technically illegal to eat a mince pie on Christmas Day, Oliver Cromwell [the well known party pooper] passed a law against it, it has never been rescinded

16 More about Rudolph, he was actually invented for a US Companies advertising

17 There is no mention of the number of wise men, Matthew just mentions "Wise Men"

18. For a christmas to be officially classified as “white” a single snow flake needs to be observed falling in the 24 hours of 25th December on the rooftop of the Met Office HQ in London.

19.According to data gathered from Facebook, two weeks before Christmas is one of the two most popular times for couples to break up; one would guess to avoid buying presents. Christmas Day is the least popular.
