Fished Arley RB today,my deep water winter swim, 11 till 5,water up slightly and chocolatey, perfect. Had the first one after 10 minutes which was a bit of a shock, then 3 more, all about 4lb to 6lb,all on garlic meat, last hour tried for some bream or roach but nothing came.
Nice days fishing. 20200815_112419.jpg 20200815_123331.jpg 20200815_123126.jpg 20200815_130049.jpg 20200815_113552.jpg 20200815_150127.jpg 20200815_160339.jpg .

Went to Arley RB early this morning in an optimistic mood, I’d got hardly any sleep but wanted to get there at first light with the intention of catching at least 4 Barbel to maintain my 2:1 catch ratio, before this I was on 9 sessions and 16 fish so needed to hit 20 on my tenth session.

The river was up a foot or two and coloured as expected. So made myself comfortable on my chosen peg. Time for the 12ft rod and 6000 reel this time instead of the 11ft and 4000 I used when it was low and clear.

I started on worm fairly close in and had a few knocks but the worms kept coming back smashed. I lasted on that for a couple of hours before I went back on my usual Sonubaits Hookbaits. Did not take long for me to be into a fish, this small 3lb Barbel.

Followed by a small Chub that came in without resist.

Not long after, second small Barbel of the day, 3.5lb. Only small but I was aiming for numbers for my catch ratio anyway, and they put up a good scrap in the flow.

A while later I hooked a fish that I was sure as I was playing it was going to beat my modest 8lb 4oz PB. An arduous fighter, it just didn’t want to move in the flow, so much so I thought I was snagged. When I got it in I was a bit disappointed when the scales only went to 5lb 15oz but a very welcome fish all the same and the biggest of the day.

Next cast and another 3.5lb Barbel in the net. However small, I had made my target of 4 Barbel.

Next cast after that another small chub that did its best impression of a 3 foot twitch with a critically balanced feeder.

Unfortunately, Barbel number 5 proved elusive. I lost a decent fish that just kited straight into a tree. And that was it, not another sniff of a Barbel. Although at about 4pm I had a bit shade on the inside now, and so made a few short casts into the shadow for a run of fish.

Starting with this small Chub, again a good impression of a Barbel bite for its size and headed straight for the snags even though a bit small.

Next cast, what I thought was another Chub, and pleasantly surprised me to be a Roach just over 1lb.

And then finally, a Chub of a similar sort of size to those I catch in the weir.

Nice way to end the day. I had a few long casts again but the Barbel hadn’t woken up again yet and I was a bit tired to fish into the evening to see if they would return. So not a bad day and reached my target to maintain my catch to session ratio.

Good work mate, nice mix of fish there. I think you under rate yourself as a barbel angler, you seem to hold you own with people far more experienced 👍🏻

Cheers mate. I go on about it a bit but that was my tenth session as I say and they have brought me 20 fish in total. The 2:1 ratio thing is only a bit of a 'target' so I can monitor how I'm doing but I reckon it's not that uncommon on the middle Severn to be able to easily surpass that especially when they're only small fish, so I don't take it too seriously just using it as a guide. (y) Gutted I lost one today though! :)

Yeah it’s good to have a sort of base line to aim for. I sort of do the same for my fishing. Not things I religiously target or even pay much attention to just little markers that constitute say a decent, good or great day.

It's a bit like my 10lb target weight for a silvers bag from the Severn, still only halfway there with that. Was meant to be going float fishing on Saturday but looking at the weather/wind, does not look that likely now, was really windy today even though pleasant temperature!

Yeah blowing big time isn’t it. I was fancying a float session at the weekend as well having not done it for about 3 weeks especially as last weekends match results suggested the roach fishing was back to the standard I had through July after a lull of a couple weeks. However looking at the forecast I think it’ll be feeder job in a sheltered peg if I can even get out at all lol

@Zerkalo Well done on maintaing your catch ratio and nice to have the chub show up too. I know you said you would have liked to top your PB, but it's encouraging to catch a number of smaller barbel as it bodes well for the future. (y)

Thanks again everyone! Appreciate all the nice comments.

@carphauler I was meant to be going tomorrow but will have to wait for the wind to settle I think. 19mph tomorrow.

Yeah, it's blowing a bit but Saturday and Sunday are much the same, maybe Sunday a little bit less, might go tomorrow but going to try somewhere different on the Severn, haven't decided where yet, maybe Knowle sands I don't know.

Others will know Knowle Sands better than me. I have been twice and good access aside from a bit of a walk though I parked in the car park instead of by the sewage works, but most of all I'd hope the mud has dried up on the pegs a bit there as was really muddy when I went. That's where I fell over playing a Barbel and lost it. I'm thinking of going to Highley next as a bit of a new adventure.

Fished Hampton Loade RB this afternoon, didn't get there till 12.30 as another Severn stretch I originally planned to go on was busy, had dogs barking and kids screaming, as I wanted a peaceful day, I packed up and moved.
Anyway, fished the stick with bread punch and 3 loaves of mashed bread, had 14lb of chub, chublets, dace and roach, a lovely day's fishing apart from the wind and showers, best chub was 5lb 2oz. 20200822_131544.jpg 20200822_132131.jpg 20200822_144558.jpg 20200822_192650.jpg 20200822_174706.jpg 20200822_174736.jpg
