I am a newcomer to fishing (sea) and have spent all afternoon practicing casting in a local field. I would really apreciate some advice for fishing on the local pier - Penarth Cardiff. Also, what is the best way to set up the line, i.e which order do the rigs and weights and swivels go...yes, I'm that green! Thanks people!

Hi Banjaxer

It would be much better if you could find an experienced pier fisher to go with. I'm curious .... what sparked you off to start this great hobby?

As to advice, I am not the person, but there are a few sea fishers who visit here, so they are sure to help you soon.

What ever you do,don't ask TOMA.[;)]

He doesn't even use hooks any more, just ties a lead on,
Saves a fortune on bait, and still catches just as much as he ever did.[}:)][;)]

Tells everyone that he's just having some casting practice.

Thanks for the advice. The problem I have is that none of my mates are into fishing so I've just got to give it a go and hope that some fellow anglers are willing to give me some tips!

Banjaxer sorry for straying off the subject, blame Peter the moderator for it..[;)][;)][;)]

Right then here goes.

Firstly what spieces are you going for.
2nd= whats the sea bed like where you intend to fish.
3rd=what set up are you using, rod reel, line.

Rigs,, does your local tackle shop sell ready made rigs up ???? if so why not buy a selection, pully rigs, pennel rigs, etc, then you can copy them.

The basics you need for making rigs are,

Swivels,beads,lead links,
When making rigs i always use a heavier line for the lead, for saftey, its best to be safe than sorry.

Always use a lighter line for your hook length.
Here's an easy rig to do,

Take a 3way swivel, tie it onto your mainline, connect your lead on the bottom eye with 12 inches of line, on the centre eye,put your hook length, very basic but it works,

As i suggested to you John Wilson has a good sea angling book out,it shows you in stages how to make rigs, can i suggest that you ignore the complicated rigs until you get a little more confidence in making rigs.

Lastly welcome to the world of crazy anglers, i'm sure you will enjoy it, have fun and be safe.

Saftey, make sure that you always feel safe when fishing, if you think that the water, venue is unsafe, dont fish itno fish in the sea is worth your life, think safety first
