Somthing like this is what you'll need, not sure if they do just a 'sata to ide' cable

You can get PCI adapters. They plug into your PCI adapter and have a IDE port on one side and a few SATA ports on another side. I think they are only around 9.99 or something.

Something like this.... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Port-SATA-Controller-VIA-Chipset/dp/B000S87GG0 The good thing is if he wanted to use the HDD as a external device it will work like that as well. He can get a SATA caddie for cheap and just use it with the above adapter.

wwhat i was hoping is that the leads going to his ide hdd could have some lead/stroke plug/adapter pushed in to and then straight in to the new hdd

the old disc drive will not be in use

just the new one

You could use that adapter you will need a IDE coming from the motherboard to the adapter. What you can do is.... Take the IDE cable out of his HDD that's in there now. Plug the end that came out of the HDD into the adapter. Put the new HDD where the old ones used to be then connect it up with the SATA cable coming from the new card to the new HDD. What size is the HDD? is it 2.5" or 3.5"?

3.5" will slot in nicely where his old one used to be so it's really just swapping the leads around and putting the adapter in. If you get stuck giz a shout on here via this post or PM or search youtube. You'll most probably know what I mean when you open it up.

Good luck!

Tom.
