Saboteurs attempt to disrupt kids angling day

The Countryside Alliance's Campaign for Angling has condemned as "malicious
and pathetic" the attempted sabotage by animal rights activists of the
eighth annual children's angling day at Passies Ponds fishery in West
Sussex.

The event, organised annually by farmer and fisheries owner Trevor Passmore,
in conjunction with the local council's sports development officer and the
Environment Agency, introduces complete beginners to the sport. Today's
event brought out 100 children, none of who had ever fished before and whose
ages ranged from 8-16, to learn about angling and to "have a go".

Saboteurs, who had advertised the event on their "Keep on Fighting" website
as an "urgent action alert" spent an hour and a half at Mr Passmore's
fishery, shouting, letting off sirens, throwing stones in the water and
photographing the children taking part until the Police arrived to escort
them off the property.

Campaign for Angling Director Charles Jardine commented: "That these people
are now out "sabbing" children is both malicious and pathetic and that the
children involved went on to have a great day shows who possesses the
greater maturity. The kids who turned out today had never fished before and
could have been put off for life but for Mr Passmore's handling of the
situation. Anglers everywhere should be aware that this has happened and
must be under no illusions that these "sabs" will come after the angling
community just as readily as they will the hunting and shooting community.
This is not about animal welfare, but about hatred, and we must guard
against it.

"It is vital that we all continue, despite episodes like this one, to bring
new people into the sport and foster their enthusiasm for angling - I am
glad no one has been put off by the actions of these idiots and am even more
delighted that, thanks to this event today, several new anglers can now
enjoy this wonderful sport".

And I suppose that once a ban on fox hunting goes thru these idiots are going to have a lot more time on their hands to target angling, these losers need to get a life/job and join the real world

Spot on that Kev,

How many kids get enjoyment out of catching their first fish. They may not keep fishing for long but it's the nice memories they reflect on later in life.

I notice that none were evident at the CLA Game Fair - was it because they would have taken a pasting if they had started there amongst the grown ups?

Pratts [:(!]

If they had tried that around here the kids would have been throwing the stones back at them, they would not have needed the police more like an abbulance lol

Ah throwing stones in the water. That sounds like a really good way of looking out for the welfare of the fish.

Hrmm that's a point Maxwell, I'm sure I read on one of their sites some information on how to sabotage fishing matches and one of the things they stipulated was "do not throw stones in the water as youmight hit a fish" - do you think we should report them to PETA? [:)]

and I like the bar of soap idea Norm [:D]

Thats a bluddy disgrace. People go to the trouble of organising a day to get kids off the streets and stop them becoming idiots like the people throwin stones n then some idiots with 3ft long hair and called leafy ruin it.
Glad the day was still a success tho.
I'm entering a series of 4 junior matches at a commercial. This takes a lot of organising and thats when the kids have their own tackle, I cant imagine how hard it would be for complete beginners.
Trouble with this is these organisers will be put off from organising other events for kids ect. And I think they're a good idea that need to be kept going.

I wouldn't care how smelly they were i'm sure i'd have to punch someone if they were chuckin stones at me while I were fishing a match, I dont even like people talkin to me.

My little boy who has just turned five was hit by a stone that was thrown by a sabboteur[:(!].(not at this particular event)
It was me who served her maj for breaking his jaw and puncturing a lung...........Ok Ok,slightly wild at the time.[:p]
But he didn`t even get a caution for putting a couple of stitches into a childs head.[:(!]
Sorry guys....but if they throw stones and one hits one of mine.........As small as I am,some one will be getting a beating with the wet end of the arm I`ve just ripped off.[^][;)][:D]

Nice one Tiny, the prick obviously deserved it.
Even if you had called the police and not touched him its not like they would have got up off their arses and done anything about it.

Here's their side of the story:

Have a read but don't encourage a debate on their forum by replying to it as they would more than likely relish the attention

Freaks. That's all they are. So much bullsh1t and misquotations it's unreal.

Quote "Most fish after being caught suffer for days before dying."

If that's the case there'd be thousands of fish corpses floating on the top of every lake and river in the country. Where do they get their information from? And they claim to be ordinary people?
Scaring a bunch of children are not the actions of ordinary people. These people are lying scumbags. (In my opinion of course.)

If they don't like angling then I see it as they're choice everybody is entitled to his/her view but what gets me is them attempting to impose they're view on others. I sometimes think that us anglers are too quick to defend absolutely anything to do with fishing instead of standing back and taking an unbiased view and admitting that some things are perhaps not perfect. But sabbing kids?? This is just pathetic tactics. I can imagine them sitting in a little room together - "right we'll hit the kids as they will be easy to frighten and it will teach them not to go fishing any more". One word - cowards. If anything it will turn the general public against them if they get hold of the story - of that I have no doubt and for this reason I hope that this act by them gets the full coverage it deserves, as lets be honest most people couldn't give a toss about whether people go fishing or not, but a large percentage of the population have kids and this act of bullying would not go down well in they're eyes. I say let everyone know about it.

They start chucking stones at me while I'm fishing, then I'll start my own heaving - with a 12-bore!

Well, at least this should show Joe Public just what these people are like, and the fasct that they are doign it just for kicks.

I would just like to say that resorting to violence will not sort anything.

If you are approached by saboteurs please, please, do not resort to any form of violence no matter how provoked you may feel as this will only give them more ammunition to further their campaigns.

Please instead follow these simple guidelines:

  • Remove all your tackle from the water
  • Release any fish you have in your nets
  • Approach the sabs with a smile and remove any sunglasses
  • Offer them you're hand in friendship
  • Invite them to sit down with you to discuss matters in a polite and orderley fashion
  • Then kick the sh#t out of them for refusing your invitation

--- Remember, do not resort to violence over your right to fish. Refusing an invitation is a different matter entirely [:D][)]
