We had a little debate at the Willows as to how to identify a Roach from an Ide or vice-versa

Anyway here is what I have in my ID books:

Ide:

The Ide normally measures 40-50cm and weighs about 2kg, although specimens up to 80cm long and weighing about 5kg have occasionally been caught.
The Ide has a relatively deep, somewhat flat sided body, a rather small head with a neat little mouth and quite large eyes.
It's back is greyish-blue to blackish-green, it's sides are silvery and belly is white.
The dorsal, caudal and anal fins are grey, the others are yellowish to reddish; the caudal fin (tail) is deeply forked.

Roach:

The Roach is a member of the carp family with relatively large scales firmly embedded in it's skin. It has a dark brown or grey back with a bluish or greenish lustre, silvery-white sides and a white, rounded belly.
It's dorsal and caudal fin are grey; the others are reddish. It has a terminal mouth and red eyes.

Body colours of both species can vary depending on age and the type of waters. River fish tend to be more colourful whereas pond fish, especially clay lined ponds, can often be paler
If anyone can add to the above, please do [:)]

Seems to me its like the difference between a chub and a dace its down to the difference in the fins. The roach has convex fins where the ide's are straight.

chill out go fishing

Dave

I was always told that the way to identify a roach from any other silver fish of a similar size is they ALWAYS have red-eyes. As far as I know, this is correct.
