River fishing tips

Hi all. Its been a long time since I last reached out for help but i know im in the right place. I move to a new town in the next couple of months and only a short walk from my house is a lovely stretch of the river wyre. Obviously I'll obey the closed season and sort fishing rights access but im really excited as im ashamed to say, ive never fished a river! Im a proficient still water angler and have won plenty of coin at club level but this is a new challenge. Its only a narrow stretch only 20ft wide max. I dont yet know depths but it has a fair stock of most course species. Im thinking a roving approach. summer/autumn a maggot feeder and winter, Bread flake and cage feeder or link ledger with cheese paste. Now im well aware that there will be more specialist gear but to start my river adventure would any of my current rods be suitable for this?

Beastmaster commercial feeder bx 9-11ft. 0.5, 1 & 2 0z tip
Drennan Stillwater feeder 11-12.5ft. 1 oz and 2 oz tips

Ill post another time advice on float rods should i get to know the river better and become brave enough to run a float through.

Also, any tips on what to look for as to river conditions for best fishing. Im particularly thinking of chub as the main target?

Those rods should do you fine depending on what’s in the stretch. Fishing with a maggot or cage feeder and get some barbel or big chub out.

I use my preston mini carp when fishing my local river which is not much wider and it works well, I've also got a beastmaster 9-11ft I think that would be fine. Although both rods are marketed as commercial Carp rods and they handle smaller fish well I do think they would struggle with bigger Barbel.

Thanks. I understand there are a few barble in the stretch but not of any large size. Ive had them to double figures on the beastmasters at commercial fisheries. River barbel are a different beast so we'll just have to see!

It's more to do with keeping them out of snags and rods a bit to soft for that.

Cheers. Well if i get outgunned then it will be a trip to the tackle shop for something more suitable. My girlfriends grandad has a lot of gear he may gift as hes sadly no longer mobile enough to fish.

chance of catching Barbel in the Wyre will be remote at best , so wouldn’t worry to much
