I had six hours on the pegs under the St Mary’s bridge into Doncaster this morning. Nobody else there when I arrived at 7am, the river looking low but with some colour in.

I’ve fished this peg three times now and always fish to the overhanging tree on the far bank. It seems the obvious fish holding spot.

Set my stall out for barbus with mixed pellets in PVA, some Supercrush Barbel groundbait along with pellet and meat for the hair. I also brought a pint of maggots to have a bash on the float should the barbel not show up…

… which they didn’t! Well, I tell a lie. I did have one small one about 3lb but that was it for the feeder/lead. I don’t think the bright sunshine helped, but maybe I could have done more to tempt them.

It was a different story on the float rod, the dace, chublets and roach were hungry for maggots. It didn’t take too long to get through a pint, a fish a chuck for a couple of hours. Nothing big but the odd nice roach and a great surprise for me, a fair few bleak! I know a lot of you get pestered by bleak further down south, but I’ve not seen one in nearly 30 years. Another species ticked off my list ✅

So not the barbel-fest I wanted but still had fun with the float. I made friends with a mallard and her four ducklings, saw kingfishers, a heron and an egret. Nobody bothered me, it was bliss really.

On the way home I dropped into a swim I’d found recently on the river Dearne…

Unfortunately it drew a blank, despite it looking amazing.

Makes sense really, Dearne flooded into lowfields didnt it? Same with kilnhurst pond at hooton lodge stretch, some great carp in the Don there.

Yeah, there’s a fair £££’s worth of fishery carp swimming around in the Don.

I’ve not updated this in a while, mostly because I’ve not fished the Don since September where I blanked over two sessions. I had another crack at it today, and didn’t blank!

I headed for a spot that I’ve not tried yet, just above the salmon run behind Doncaster prison (for those that know it). I picked some maggots, worms and meaty ground bait up in the morning and got to my peg around 1pm. This section of river diverts from the main river before the salmon run section, it’s a steady pace and very deep. It then hits the downhill rapids before steadying off around the corner and heading into Donny town centre.

The yellow cross is roughly where my chosen peg was, a bit of overhanging tree giving some cover to fish to. Aside from that, it’s a fairly uniform length of river. Depth wise it goes up to 15ft! You wouldn’t think it to look at it though.

Anyway, I mixed up the groundbait and started with an 8mm pellet. 10lb mainline to 8lb 3ft hooklength and size 14 MWG guru hook, with a Korum river cage feeder packed with meaty goodness. Nothing much happened for the first 90 mins, I switched between pellet and meat and kept recasting every 15-20 minutes to get some bait down but aside from a couple of plucks, not much was doing.

I decided to make a change, so on went a maggot feeder and a 2ft hook length to a size 14 with four maggots on. This seemed to work as on the second cast the tip pulled round slowly and I was into a fish. A spirited fight (for a river bream at least) and this 3.5lb fish was in the net.

I was happy not have blanked, but of course wanted more. Maggot feeder casts were more frequent, and after the next four resulted in nothing I decided to put a worm on for the fifth which was taken within 30 seconds of placing the rod in its rest.

This definitely wasn’t another bream, and although it was only a small one, it was a very welcome barbel. Estimated around 3-4lbs.

Sadly no more barbel after that. I fished on until it was almost dark, and was rewarded with a nice chub taken on a big piece of meat.

So not the most prolific of days but good to explore a new swim, and not a bad result for just over 3 hours fishing. My wife’s on holiday at the moment with a friend, so I might just take myself back for another go tomorrow.

I returned for another go this morning and to use up some bait. I chose the peg at the end of the salmon run today, it’s pretty fast flowing here as the water pours out of the narrow run and into the wider river.

To cut a long story short, I didn’t manage a single knock here. Tried meat, pellets, worms and maggots. The only time I had a bend in the rod was when getting snagged up twice, losing two rigs in the process.

I gave it three hours then moved downstream.

I set my whip up there as it’s a bit steadier and shallower, the meat rod fishing as a sleeper while I set about catching small roach. I think I’ve come to realise that three hours without a bite is too much for me, I need to be busy and get bored if I’m not catching.

The Acolyte whip is always a pleasure, and I enjoyed the 40 or so roach, dace and perch that came my way.

Sadly, I never had a touch on the barbel rod. It’s not the easiest river to catch them from. Seems the majority come out after dark. Unless I’m fishing it wrong 🤔

I still need to fish here. To be honest I haven’t been out at all in some time
It’s not the easiest venue, but there are barbel there (somewhere). Have you found that you’ve not had the same motivation to go after your Trent barbel success?

It’s time I’m struggling with tbh mate. Kourtney trains Monday Tuesday and Thursday. Me and Jacob train Thursday. Kourt plays Saturday and me and Jacob both play Sunday.

It’s hard to find the time now. The itch is there.
