Releasing fish

Seen as i have only ever fished for pleasure, i tend not to use a keepnet, even tho i have one. What im curious to know is - where is the best place to release a fish once youve caught it?
Is it best to place it back upstream, downstream or in front of your peg?
Surely u dont want to be scaring other fish off in a swim u may have found?

Depends on the species and the size caught methinks. I take it you are talking rivers here.

I don't actually know the official answer, but I tend to release chub over pound about 10 metres downstream. Other species I'm not so fussy, but as I said, I don't know the real answer I'm afraid.

I never put any of the following species in a keepnet: barbel, carp, cats, and pike. The only time I use a keepnet is if the release of fish could spook the shoal. I still wouldn't overload the net or keep them for any length of time.
