Hi All, I have recently purchased a pair of Drennan Specialist Duo rods for my trip to France next year, If I'm allowed in after Brexit ? . I'm after a pair of Baitrunners for them. Anyone use them and what reels do you use ? Thinking of Daiwa Black Widows in 3000 or 3500. Thanks

Hi John, I bought 4 black widows a few years ago, two 4500s and two of I think 4000s and I had the same problem with both sets that being the bale arm roller would cease to roll and would flatten the line when fishing , the roller I found to be a nylon Bush and not a roller as you would expect ,I used to carry a tube of machine oil with me and put a drop on every outing, needless to say I didn't have them long.
Personally I now always use shimano but even these seem to be nowhere as tough as they used to be. have a look at the okuma range as imho they do offer a decent reel for the money.

We used to glue the bail rollers on Shimano reels in the past as they caused massive line twist not a problem these days as they adopted the Daiwa Twistbuster style bail roller.

What Test Curve Specialist Rods?

Personally I use shimano 4000 Fb DL on 12ft feeder and barbel rods (1.75tc)

I also have old *20 years 5010 baitrunner if I feel I need bigger reels

Shimano 6000 size is closest they spo currently I would go DL as extra cost gets you a spare spool and better internals

Probably too big for what you need but, I use a couple of Shimano 8010’s for my Barbel fishing. Never had a problem with either. Still smooth after all these years and they’ve had some welly.

4000 DL is what I would use as it would balance better but strangely 6000 DL are cheaper

Partly depends if you prefer front or rear drag when I bought my 4000 DL they were cheaper than the 6000 DL
