Reference my photo of the Irish Pike covered in Spawning Nodules!
Does this meanshe had spawned, or was going too?
Does anyone know at what stage these develop and how long they last?
Is April 12th about the right spawning time, oris it late or early?
Come on John or Matt, I hope you guys can tell me, or anyone else please.

Thanks

Trev

to the best of my knowledge pike always spawn in april
so your pike may be just going to ,or just has spawned

it isn`t the size of the tiddler that counts

Pike being a predator are usually the first to spawn. This allows the fry to feed on the newly hatched fry of the other species. Pike can and do start preparing to spawn as early as February. As a matter of fact I caught a roach last week and as I took hold to unhook it I could feel how plump it was and on looking it seemed to be very close to spawning. As I have normally finished piking by the end of March and not seen any signs of pike spwaning April/May seems a logical time.
Re the spawning tubercles never seen these on a pike, but in other species like Bream its the male who developes them so is it the male in pike to.

Knew I could rely on you John!
So at 9lbs 12 ozs, 'She' was a male!!!
The weight threw me, as I had always thought the male pushed to reach 8 lbs.
No wonder we had the exciting tail walking display and !
even more exciting, if the males are large, what size females does the water hold?

Can't wait to be back in June.Pleased to report that Geraldine rang to confirm room this morning!

Cheers

Trev - are you absolutely that wasn't a bream you caught?

Pike are the long, skinny critters with teeth.

When pike spawn. Up to a few years ago all my piking finshed at the end of the traditional season. for the last few years I have extended this to the begining of April. With the proviso that the first pike caught with signs of spawning the fishing stopped there and then.
From the above as I never caught a fish ready to spawn I assume that the time to spawn was April onwards.
Trev re the fish you caught I wouldnt like to state catergoricaly what sex a pike was up to approx 10lb.Unless ready to spawn and the signs were then obvious.
I have always smiled when some one says all jacks are male.??????
Does this mean then that females are born weighing over 10lb or do the males suddenly change sex. I am not being nasty or sarcastic but this is the way that a lot of anglers think, and to keep perpetuating this is wrong. At the end of the day does it matter what sex a fish is. Unless as you say it can give an indication of what size females may grow to. John

Trev,
Ive had the experts at Hull University and a fishery consultant with over 20 years of fish disease experience on the case. Nothing conclusive. My first impression was fungal lesions caused by some external damage. I have never seen a pike with spawning tubercles. No one could give me another opinion than my original thoughts so thats the best I can offer without seeing it first hand.
