Hi All!

I'm fishing a match on Orchid Lakes (Oxford) in a couple of weeks but i've never even laid eyes on the water before! I was hoping a few kind hearted souls could give me a bit of advice on the best methods/ baits etc that could put me in with a chance. I've been to the website but it appears more oriented towards the water itself rather than how to fish it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Nick

PS. It's the carp water i'm fishing and its a 24hr match.

Thanks again!!

Hi mate,welcome to maggotdrowning.
Is it the BCAC qualifier your fishing?
Orchid is a very tricky water some times,it can depend a lot on which swim you fish but as it's a match you won't have a choice.
There are loads of features to fish to bars and slit patches.
Most of my fish from orchid have come from either the alamo or the top dugout.
I would try Ice red or seed of the weed as both baits have a good track record on orchid and dont be shy with the bait a they seem to like a bit.
Most of the guy's that fish it seem to use a baitboat and seem to go for the areas of silt between the bars or at the ends of bars.
I have got a map of the water somewhere showing all the bars and features if i can find it I will e-mail you with it as it may be of help.

Don't argue with an idiot they will only bring you down to there level and beat you on experience

Cranberry and caviar from Tails up were the Mutts Nuts on there last year.
You will have you use a marker to find the clear patches,Clip up and keep feeding the same places with pellet and broken hook bait.
This is by no means an easy water so just keep looking out for fish topping and cast out to them.
If you have any lillys look fpr the clear carp runs in betwen them and fish a single bait in them.

Best of Luck.. Let us know how you go on.

Thanks guys, your advice is gratefully recieved!

In answer to a couple of questions, its a carp match on the main lake (i believe this itself is called orchid lake, am i right?) and its the Angling times/ Nash competition final (so there's quite a bit of cash at stake)[:D]

Am i looking at fishing pva bags here, or is a spod more likely to be of use? (i don't have a bait boat by the way [:(])!!

Thanks for the welcome to the site also, its great to meet people who really seem to want to help!! [:D][:D][:D]
