Does an angler need to be sponsored by an angling company? i was thinking over the weekend could anglers be sponsored by companys not attached to the angling scene like football teams, cricket teams race teams ect. The company i work for has sponsered a couple of youth football teams and an amatuer motor racing team which got them very little advertising space and no extra work of the back of it! has anyone heard of people being sponsored in this way! whats your thoughts on it?

Yes they can - take a look at the Bass fishing tournaments in the USA.

It's more a question as to whether a company with no involvement in angling sees any value in sponsoring an angler or team.

In the case of JJL (Joseph James Law) the CEO Andrew Settle is a keen angler himself and really enjoys his involvement in the sport.

There's plenty businesses out there willing to do sponsorship after all they can can get a tax deduction for sponsoring if they get public exposure from the sponsorship. ... Therefore, if they want you to sponsor local sports teams AND create a tax benefit for their business. Obviously there are certain rules and criteria that have to be met but still a tax deductible opportunity :)

All the big competitions were sponsored generously by alcohol or tobacco firms 20 or more years ago but the sport struggled to replace them when the nanny state banned their support.
The replacements were mostly sponsors who paid for some of the running costs but the prize money was generated by the anglers entry fees.
It would be very difficult to find an outside sponsor these days as the returns from angling are far too fragmented to make it worthwhile, for example who really cares that angler A beat angler B in a 24 peg match at xyz venue sponsored by Ebay fishing supplies, its just not got the penetration into the outside world, its hard enough for the England team to get any sort of mention on TV no matter what they win.

Wilkinson Sword used to be one of the sponsors of the British Pike Champs in the 1980s - you'd get a couple of disposable razors and a tie-pin in your 'welcome pack' at the draw. Ruddles County were sponsors of the Winter League one year - I only know that 'cos we got badges for winning our league and their name was plastered all over them.
