Well he got Rafa and maybe the £6 million a year played a part in that.
Of course money talks. However I think Rafa was under the illusion that Ashley was selling up and that played a big part in him taking it on. It's not just about wages, it's about budget and ambition as well. That seems to have been a problem for Rafa. As it would any ambitious manager.

The £30 million for Perez is crazy money. He’s been 5hit for years and majority of fans didn’t rate him. He came good after Xmas last season. About same time we signed almiron. He wouldn’t of got £5 million last season

Almiron's pace certainly made the difference in freeing up space for Perez and Rondon to exploit
And Crackatoa's nailed it. Rafa approached Newcastle originally rather than the other way round as he thought he could get a long term project going.
But Ashley's perfectly happy if we finish 17th every year and just rake in the TV money.
Apparently Rafa was offered a one year contract on the same money and with the same transfer budget as the previous year (despite the massive increase in TV money) as well as no more money for the training facilities or academy development which have been almost totally neglected since Ashley took over.
And this makes an interesting comparison...

Even Fat Sam has knocked it back.

Sack the board
They really are up s**t creek if Fat Sam turned them down and the next best option is Bruce, makes me laugh when they won't pay a few million in compensation for a manager yet pay tens of millions for a player.

The word on the street in Sheffield is that the Wendies will accept £50 in compensation for Bruce provided Newcastle settle his £2,000 bill at the local pie shop.

It is crazy money, but the market has gone mad.
Now you've lost Perez and Rondon, and the imminent incoming Bruce. you must fear the worse?
[if pace frees up Perez, he'll love it at Leicester :) ]

if Bruce gets the job and there is a takeover he could be out of a job before the season starts.

The only reason the Bruce appointment hasnt been confirmed is because they're still negotiating over Bruce's bonus for success in avoiding relegation, otherwise known as a successful season

Well we have signed a couple of players. 40million. New record and another for 15 million. Ashley spending more than he did with Rafa.

He is on a pay per play deal and will miss the first month as injured.
You have to ask why as his medical treatment must be costing something.
Bit of a shame really as was a pretty good player

You have to ask why ?
Season ticket sales were looking to be well down so, local hero returns, one of our own etc etc..
Cynical, me ?

Still potentially a good signing if he can get fit but that is as big an if as it gets.
At any rate some local nightspots will be rubbing their hands in anticipation

They're doing far better than Rafa did at this point, too many negatives by the Toon army maybe. Give the bloke a chance I say, the players seem to be on his side by what I've seen, good luck to them.

Certainly doing far far better than I expected at the start of the season. Where the goals are coming from is a bit worrying though, think its ten from defenders, six from midfield and only two from the front three and not sure that can be kept up over a full season. Carroll's only fit enough to give an hour at the very most so Joelinton especially needs to up his game - at the moment it looks like we'd have been better off keeping Joselu, let alone Rondon.
Our football's pretty horrible to watch but to be fair, second half of last season excepted, it often was under Rafa as well .
