Page 6 of todays anglersmail carries a report on a new deadly threat to Britains carp stocks.
A new disease called KHV (koi herpes virus) has been brought into Britain through fish movements, & the deaths have already started.
It kills 95% of stock in the infected waters & there is no known cure for it.
It may be Koi Herpes Virus but it has spread to the common, mirror & ghost carp.
With a lot of fisheries stocking koi or other ornamental carp there is a greater risk of this disease spreading to other fisheries.
Garden pond owners are notorious for "releasing" their fish which have grown to large for their ponds or appear distressed into park lakes, ponds & even rivers.
If one fish with KHV was put into a water then the whole stock would be wiped out or have to be destroyed.
Scientists believe the angling world should brace itself for a major outbreak of the KHV disease, its at its most dangerous when the water temperature rises in the summer.
