Morning Barbel Session

Back onto the upper Lea with barbel the target. Only had the morning and found a swim around 5-6yards across with a likely looking overhanging tree about 10 yards downstream which would be my haunt for the session.

Set up and ready to go by just before 6am and within 5 minutes I was into something. Took me straight into the reed beds and a tough fight, a pristine 4lb barbel fell to my double corn feeder rig:

Straight back in with the corn and no real touches for the best part of an hour. Time to switch it up. On goes a krill boilie.
The line hadn’t been in the water 2 minutes and the tip wrapped around once more. The bait switch did the trick and a 4lb 10oz barbel on the bank:

Over the next few hours I had a couple of 2-3lb barbel and a few babies as well, mostly on the krill boilie. 4 barbel fell in the same hour which was superb fun.

Time to pack up as the bites had slowed off.

of course the rod and net are the last to go away and a final chuck in hope to the far bank as I’m packing away my bits.
As I go to pick the rod from the rest it goes - perfection for any angler.

this time a bonus fish. A 3lb chub fallen to the krill boilie

Another very enjoyable session and aching arms after some great barbel fights.

not had so many barbel in a short session for a long time.

for those interested here is a breakdown of times baits and sizes:

Sounds like a good session. Nice to be busy with them rather than wait all day for a big un in my book.

They are funny creatures - even the 4lbers go like exocet missiles. My normal set up on this river is a technium medium feeder rod which would be a little hairy with a double figure barbel but I’m sure it could cope - if I’m targeting the biggens I normally use a carp rod. The way they bite they’d give a bite indication on a scaffolding pole so I don’t think you can go too heavy with the tip for barbel

Yeah I think they are probably our hardest fighting freshwater fish pound for pound. I haven’t got the patience to fish for the big uns so every barbel I’ve caught has been in the 1-6lb range and they certainly are little torpedoes at that size!

Sounds like a cracking day you had and nicely topped with a chub as well. (y)

Beautiful fishing 👍. Reminds me of lady pit farm in the early days. Well done Imperium.
