Hi 'BERTY' and welcome to our forums.

It's nice to see another angler starting up a forum as the fundamentals of the World Wide Web is to act as a resource for information, share knowledge and extend communication.

I once spoke to another webmaster some five months ago when I kicked off this forum as a replacement to our previous one which as some of our members may remember, was a lot more basic than this.
Click Here to go to it.

My main concern was that as we were 'web-friends' I didn't want him to feel that I was going in direct competition with him and trying to poach his site visitors and regulars. His response was likewise, "let's build the community".
One thing that we both agreed on though was no matter how big (or small) our forums became, we would not spam each others.
It's a bit like trotting a stick float down into your neighbour's swim to catch his fish, something that is frowned upon in most circles including by other anglers. (The anglers in this case being the users of a forum)

When match fishing, the idea is to catch as many fish, weight-wise as possible, likewise with website management. You want as many visitors as possible.
When match fishing, if your neighbour downstream is catching and you're not, you need to 'promote' your swim more than his. Give 'his' fish something that he hasn't, regular feeding and hard work and hopefully 'his' fish may move into your swim. Then the real hard work starts, you have to keep them there. If they lose interest, they're off.

Basically when starting off, you've got to start somewhere to get your visitors but you've also got to have something there to keep them.
Promote your forum by all means, but use site promotion tools, search engine placings, link exchanges and invaluably - word of mouth, and try to refrain from poaching other site's users as you may get a hit from them but you will not get regular useage

Regards, Dave

None at all Berty,

If I can give you one bit of sound advice though
. When starting up a forum don't run before you walk. It's much better to have a friend assist you in the early stages, work with him/her and get both your friends to join you on the forum.
Once you start getting a few mates together, the word will spread and your forum will grow. Its at this time that you want to look for Moderators.
You already have your friend who is someone that you can trust with the work and effort that you'll have both put in. Extra moderators should come from your regulars as you will have got to know them and above all trust them.

Hi OG,

Just to clear up a bit of confusion.
We don't mind people posting links to their sites on here and the only rules that we have are the ones you agree to when you register. Those can be seen again by clicking the Register link at the top.

In my opinion there are no snide remarks just opinions which we are all entitled to have provided they are posted in a correct manner.

But that apart as they say in the movies "On with the Show..."

sorry Rico,

We have been doing some massive changes and alterations with the server that the database is housed on and need to have the database backed up to preserve all the posts.
Chances are your post will have been between backups - sorry

Hopefully everyone will now benefit from the increased speed and (touch wood) reliability.

Once again I can only appologise and if anyone else has lost one, the same to you,
Dave

Berty,
Just tried to register for your fishing site, but all I get is Casino adverts and questions about my income etc, that have nothing to do with fishing!
Sorry mate, tried to give it a go!
