Hello from a newbie!

I’ve been very fortunate with an unexpected Christmas bonus, and as a result have decided to splurge on a rod and reel capable of medium to long range feeder fishing on venues such as Boddingtons, predominantly for carp and bream. My budget is circa £500 - £600 for the pair, and I thought I’d solicit the help and advice from all you Maggotdrowners out there!

As well as large, open commercial venues I also fish the middle reaches of the Thames in Oxfordshire so would also hope to use the outfit here.

Happy New Year to all!

Freespirit 12 or 13 ft distance power and a castizm 25qd
Cheers for the quick response, the 13 foot power distance looks intriguing. Am I right in thinking that the Cast’izm and TDR distance are almost the same reel, other than Magseal?

Have a look at the preston distance master 120gram, I’ve got the 80 and 100gram rods, and they’re fantastic,, I watched a video with Tommy Pickering in last week at boddingtons, and noticed he’d bought the preston distance master, he’s not sponsored anymore, and free to use anything he thinks is up to the job. Reel wise, I use shimano 5500 xtd’s, the line lay and winding power, is superb, you could buy two of these for the price of a tdr distance reel

Cheers Mike, the Preston looks like a cracking bit of kit, particularly for around £250. As for the reel, I’ll check out the 5500’s on value alone, however I do have a weakness for a Daiwa reel!

Yea the, castizm 19 - castizm 25qd and the tidr 25qd are practically the same reel depends if your wanting extra spools and such - I have tried a few distance rods like the slr - guru distance - rive distance - black vipers - 13ft sphere - and for the work you want if far nothing comes close to the hi-s free spirit power distance

Sounds like a 2 rod job to me. A genuine distance rod would put you on the far bank of the middle Thames in most places plus the requirements for carp and bream would be quite different 🤔

I’ve been using a 4m Preston Distance Master and a 720 Preston Intensity reel for all my distance fishing recently. They go perfectly together.

I’m not the best cast’er but can chuck a window feeder or bullet feeder 90m with this set up.

I have an 11 foot Acolyte Plus for medium work on the Thames around the Dorchester stretch, where I’m a Member. Further down towards Pangbourne and the Child Beale stretch the Thames becomes significantly deeper and wider and it’s here that I’d utilise the extra power of a distance outfit. The Free Spirit and the Preston, both suggested, apparently offer soft playing actions, especially important for bream. Or would you consider such an outfit a bit specialised?

Ah I see I didn’t realise you’d be venturing down to the Berkshire stretches it does indeed look like a different prospect down there 👍🏻

Suffice it to say I won’t be venturing there anytime soon! The entire stretch resembles the Mississippi!

Haha yeah it’s not much better up here, only positive I can say is that it’s not quite a bad as this time last week but weeks off decent that’s for sure 😂

I’ve never seen a free spirit rod, but I’ve read the reviews and seen footage on them on YouTube,, no doubting they’re a cracking bit of kit,, and if I was fishing for mainly carp I’d probably have bought one, but I fish for roach and bream, and the 100gram preston does the job very well, as does my acolyte distance feeder👍👍👍

Hi Mike I've also got the 4mtr 100grm Preston Distance Master & Preston 620 Extremity reel..

What sort of distances are you able to achieve with yours and with what set-up?
