I think the quality of the anglers on the south west circuit has always been strong
My perspective is that every area has or had a very strong circuit ... but these days it is more "venues" that have a strong turnout or not. And you also have venue specialists.
I moved from Bedfordshire to Warwickshire in the early 90s.
The Winter League I moved from had Team Image (Black Horse), ABC, Milton Keynes, Team Robboss - and the one I moved to had Shakespeare Superteam, Starlets, Aquarians, DAM AFS etc

It's always been hard to win ... so take advantage of any luck!

That’s true, but the south west has always been overlooked compared with the rest of the country along with the north east.

I suppose the print media was more focussed on midlands (Times) and the South East (Mail)

Anglers like Geoff Salisbury, Mike Stone, Topper and Kevin Rowles all had a well deserved reputation - even back in those days.
Team wise we always considered Bathampton a danger.

This thread is becoming like a homage to the south west 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️There are other parts of the country and most of those top anglers travel

Tbf I've seen Oxfordshire classified as Midlands, southwest, south, southeast and all sorts so reckon you can claim to be from any of them! I think we are basically Midlands but don't like being lumped in as we're a mostly rural county rather than industrial and are more financially aligned with the south and south east 🤔😉

A foul hooked fish winning a match is pure luck, unlike this example of one fish winning a match..... skilfully caught, out smarting the field 😀

Skill?

Only ever fished one sea match (knockup) with nine other WSF site members.
More of a fish in during the February dulldrums.

One fish catch by my good self won the match - a rockling.

The skill came when I tripped and managed a 15yard cast with a scratching rig - three size 2 flapper (paternoster) baited with tiny bits of black lug.
As I recovered and received a barrage of banter I felt a slight tug and reeled the fish in!
Within minutes everyones casting short!

Early last winter when we could Match fish, I received a phone call from our Club match organizer, telling me he had booked a match on
a local commercial, mid week, he also had opened it up to other clubs, to boost the numbers, so it was going to be worth winning.
I was really up for it spending time preparing, making sure everything was right, bait sorted, rigs rods, all the usual prep.

Morning of the Match weather was cold strong easterly wind, with heavy rain forecast for lunch time on , arrives at the venue to see all
the usual lads, puts money into bucket your on peg 12 was shouted, apparently nice 35 mtr chuck to an island.
Considering the stock levels on this lake are high, it was fishing very poor, anglers struggling all round the lake, but it was cold,

Edit: By Maesknoll, post tidying error, I deleted the punchline....

14lb carp, foul hooked, won the match.

.
I reckon it takes a lot of skill to hook a carp in the tail 😂😂😂
