4kg sash window balance weight, 3m of 4mmx28mm chain & 25m of 10 mm polypropylene rope.
The sash weights are great because they are a long bar & usually land "pointed end down". I can then use the chain to "saw" through the ice back to the bank. Do this down both sides of the swim & then break up the stuff in the middle & tuck it under the ice at the sides using your pole (CAREFULLY!)

Easyist way I ever found was using a loaf of bread. The area soon got cleared. How? by using the bread to attract and feed the ducks.

I used a brick on a piece of line today and I caught 1 roach about an hour and a half after.

Best ice breaker I can remember was "come here often"
followed up by "can I buy you a drink?"
worked for me.

Peter.
I thought we were talking about ICE!.
That stuff's just a bit of surface tension[:D][:D]
Where I'm at ice is made for skating on & we chop it up with Stihl saws to make Igloos[)]

Peter - you are on the right track. But if the ice gets a little thicker
