Now I don't go in for this valentines stuff normally, but tonight my Mrs (Jill) surpised me with a nice meal.

We had surf & turf with a bit of all sorts on the side (keep it clean) .I'm just wondering if you guy's did anything different tonight ?

Here's a pic of my 2 lads munching (should be chomping) at the bit ..... come on dad .. ditch the camera [:D]

I always knew you were a big softy at heart Martin.

Well, Margaret has been telling me (nay nagging me)for weeks that the only romance in my soul is reserved for fish, and the romance in her life was seeing me go fishing. (That is what the OMO is for Peter).

I had a phone call at work yesterday morning about half eight with her wondering what I am getting up to. She woke up to find a box of chocolates and her first valentines card since... well I can't remember.

She is now very suspicious and treating me very nicely thank you. It sometimes pays to be out of character.

Bought the wife some roses, chocolates and paid for her and a few mates to go on the raz.
The peace and quiet I had all night was priceless. Now I get to go fishing on Sunday with Chub in mind and a blessing from my good lady.
And NO blessing isnt Latin for anything else.

Well I bought us a bottle of vintage champagne. I don't know very much about champagne, but once at a posh wedding we went to they served a really good tasting one all through the (stand up!) reception. We try a bottle once or twice a year in the lower price ranges, but have never been able to match that taste. Yesterday's bottle was a pricey one at normally 45 quid, but I got 30% off. 20% off for the Tesco Valentine's offer and 10% cos I get staff discount.

Anyways it didn't live up to expectations. It tasted too strong to us and I ended up drinking most of it.

If anyone knows a good one to try, please let me know. Otherwise we'll stick to the Spanish cava as it seems just as good, so far.

Lid, you've just mentioned my specialist subject ( apart from fishing lol). Being in the wine trade means that i am lucky enough to taste many wines from around the world. It all depends on what style of champagne you prefer. For a light, crisp appley style, go for Perrier Jouet, if you prefer the more elegant style, go for Taittinger. Roederer produce a rich, creamy champagne. If you want a powerful style with lots of structure go for Veuve Clicquot whereas if you want a rich, buiscitty fizz then go for Bollinger. Which champagne did you have? If the one you had tasted too strong, the try a Blancs de Blanc type of champagne which is made from 100% chardonnay. These have a very smooth, buttery, melt in the mouth taste.
Alternatively many Aussie and New Zealand sparkling wines offer a very similar quality to mid priced champagne, but for a fraction of the price!
Anyone need anymore wine advise then just ask away[:D]

Hi Matt

Thanks for the info. I meant to mention in my post that the champagne we got was Bollinger Grand cuvee 1992.

Lid, yeah the Bolly grand annee is a very powerful style which is not to everyones taste. If you're looking for something of the same quality but with a more elegant taste, try Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque blancs de blanc (either 92 or 96). If you really want to push the boat out, you could always try Louis Roederer's Cristal (80 - 100 quid). But whatever you do, steer well clear of Dom Perignon (vastly overpriced for what you get in the bottle)[:p]
