How are reel sizes established?

I have Shimano 4000 and 5000 reels and can't understand how the sizes relate.

For example the Super 4000M's spool is 50mm dia x 20mm deep (top to skirt), and the Baitrunner Aero RE 5000 is only 47mm dia x 20mm deep.

I would have expected the 5000 to be bigger than the 4000.

Does anyone know or care enough to supply an explanation?[?][?][?]

yep there's no standard mate, my Daiwa JupiterZ 5000 is quite a big reel, 0.35(15lb)/310M !!!

i was wondering something similar as i need some spare spools for my shimano 6000GTE baitrunners.

i hear the 6000 & 8000 are interchangeable - but what's the difference in line cap? and that the old aero 4000 is the same as the newer 6000

confusion at every turn!

Line Capacity: 5000 10lb-240yds, 6000 12lb-265yds & 8000 12lb-320yds.

I have used 8000 spools on 6000 reels, spool centre is just thinner on the 8000.
