Anyone use Hinders? Apparently they've been popular for many years, do they live up to their reputation?

I'm looking at trying the Elips and Barbel Bomb range of baits this year. No real reason as I've had good success with my favourite Sonubaits Barbel Hookbaits and standard 4mm coarse coppens, just fancy trying these famous baits.

I'm looking at the Dumbells, Ground Pellets and Feeder Mix groundbaits, and to a lesser extent the pellets.

A question about the dumbells, can you put them straight on a hair, does a needle go through them or do you need to drill them?

I live near Hinders and have bought stuff from them for decades. I know Bryan the owner quite well.

They used to be particle suppliers, then set up a big specialist oriented tackle shop and fairly recently downsized back to selling bait only.

Their pellets are good but expensive. Elips pellets and halibuts were pioneered by Hinders. I have used serious quantities of both. They have also sold some top quality boilies in the past (I know who made some of them for Hinders). I don’t know who makes their current non-pellet stuff, but the ‘cheese’ range looks interesting, as do some of the paste products.

I do use mixed pellets as feed and I buy them in big bags. I use several suppliers; my local feed merchant sells 20/25 kg bags for less than £40. They store well and I use them for some Stillwater fishing too. I tend to use frozen boilies for barbel hookbaits.

PS just phone them up and ask about the relative hardness of the dumbells. And drilling them is easy anyway !

Sounds good to me. The thing I like about the Sonubaits Dumbells I use is the ease of hair rigging them, they just stay on a hair and don't dissolve so you can leave them in and even recast with the same hookbait.

I'm thinking about buying the Elips Oil just to glug my coppens with as I seem to be spending as much as I want just getting the following.

1x 5kg Pellet & Crustacean Groundbait (to mix with Brown Crumb for a Bream fishing holiday as it sounds alright and is on offer).
1x 10kg Barbel Bomb Feeder Mix (I don't use much groundbait when Barbel fishing generally but this will last me all year, I just have to think about storage space)
1x Barbel Bomb Dumbells size Mini
1x Elips Dumbells size Midi
1x 1 litre Elips Oil

Total £69 😁

I’m sure it will all work.

One question; why would you want to recast a dumbell ? If it is designed to smell good to the fish, then the scent trail will diminish in direct relation to the time it is submerged. Unless you are trying the ‘washed out bait’ trick every other cast (!); I would rather put a new smelly bait on each cast.

Alternatively you could buy a pot of paste from Hinders and squeeze a bit round the dumbell if you are going to re cast it - that way you get some fresh smell into the water.....and you would be trying two subtly different baits.

I was surprised when I started Barbel fishing that I caught at all on the Sonubaits. They have very little noticeable aroma and are a neutral sandy colour. I have tried other dumbells and not had a single fish on anything else so it's became a bit of a habit, maybe a bad one re recasting them, but they look the same as new after a few casts. Maybe it is the washed out effect that catches fish but that wasn't intentional on my part.

The only thing is with them is after a few months I've noticed they go a bit harder and are harder to get a needle through, that's when I lose confidence in them as they probably go a bit stale, that's how long tubs have been lasting me though. (y)

I've heard the machine to make Elips Pellets broke and they couldn't justify replacing it and the recipe has changed in recent years. I'm not so interested in the pellets themselves though as too expensive compared to bulk coppens.

Interesting that the spelling has changed; I wonder why ?

Is it actually the same product as the original and a copyright issue; or is it an attempt to duplicate (at least in name) a fabled product and so demand a premium price....?

Bought from Hinders for many years and the Barbel Blitz range is a good product.
Sadly the Elips pellets which have accounted for many Barbel are not a patch on those made a few years ago.

Needle goes fine through the Dumbells. Glad I bought two sizes as even the midi ones aren't that big, same size as the Sonubaits I use.

Am wondering if it's wise to glug my 4mm Coppens loosefeed pellets or if I should save it for hookbaits. Probably will anyway!

Actually a bit of an error on my order, both dumbells have arrived in Mini size, so that's why I thought they were small.
