I have a Hi Fi made up of different separates - digital tuner, CD player, turntable, speakers and amplifier. The set up has been on place for a good few years now. Turned on the amplifier today and I could hear a reasonably loud him coming through the speakers. This has never been like this before. Does anyone have any idea what may have happened? The amplifier is approx 20 years old. Maybe it's dying?

If it's just started, it's usually a dry capacitor or solder. Could be any component - remove one at a time or switch plug-ins to isolate the culprit. If it's the amp, I had an older one fixed recently and it cost about £50.

As Grey says it is almost certainly a capacitor. Probably the big electrolytic in the power supply. 20 years is about right for that to happen.
