Did you know it is quite legal, due to an obscure local by-law, to fish the Trent Embankment in " THE CLOSED SEASON ", provided that you are ledgering and you use a hook with a 1/2 inch gape use worm only and no keep net and claim that you are fishing for eels and there is nothing anybody can do about it !

You can have some great chub, carp and barbel sport!

Other areas must have similar by-laws too.

its not just the trent.
north west byelaws allow you to use worms for trout but hooks must be shorter than 80mm and a gape less than 15mm.

I don't think it's just about what you can get away with.

The idea of the closed season is to give those fish a rest.

If you are fishing in the closed season for course fish you are not entering into the spirit of what was intended.

You might catch a big barbel but it will make you very unpopular.[:(]

Why isn't it right ?

If a style of angling is legal and what is caught is not the intended species then so what !

Why would catching a big barbel make anyone unpopular when you can catch one in a still water quite legitimately.

It used to be that way on the Severn, and in the old Severn/Trent water authority area.

Quite a few used to claim they were fishing for eels, which was of course rubbish. Dont know if it still is ok, but hey, whats the need now with plenty of stillwaters open ?

By saying you are fishing for Eels but really your fishing for barbel you would be lieing.Lieing is considered bad by a lot of people .These people are called 'honest'.
Its called morals.e.g While your at work the postman could be shagging your wife. This would be legal but your wife would be cheating on you.RIGHT![;)]

Definately a case of morals

(Nice analogy phil-k [:D])

Basically if you know what you are doing is wrong, then why do it?
Regardless of what your beliefs are re the Close Season , it is still the law that you cannot fish for Coarse Fish during it

I thought 'shagging' was slang, not a swear word.[:I]

Not quite the same though is it?

If someone is going fishing targetting Trout and accidently catches a Coarse fish, then it is purely that - accidental

What you are implying is that you know it's illegal to fish for Coarse fish as it is the Close Season and yet you have discovered a method that you can use and want to use to target Coarse fish even though that method is primarily for Eels

C'mon you're only fooling yourself if you think that you can get away with it

If a fluff chucker was intentionally fishing for trout but accidently caught a chub it is different from pretending to fish for trout and intentionally catching chub.

Did your parents not teach you right from wrong[?]

First,

Most swear words are slang for something, think of what rhymes with hunt.

Second,

There is nothing wrong in my book when you are targeting one species and catch another, morals and right and wrong are purely abstract conceptions and matters of opinion for the individual !

But the point is you are not chasing one species really are you. If you truly were only chasing eels you may have a point but your original post quite blatently states you would possibly be chasing chub, carp and barbel. Now that is breaking the law to an extent.

No it's not !

You would be angling abiding by the by-law as it stands.

If a barbel grabs your worm thats not the anglers fault when he is targeting eels.

KH Alert !!

You've already stated that you would use this method to fish for:

Quote: You can have some great chub, carp and barbel sport!

So where is the targetting of eels ?

Plain and simple - you are either seriously fishing for eels or you are trying to use the byelaw to fish for Coarse fish, which is illegal during the Close Season
