FOOTBALL legend Jack Charlton is to host a special day out for scores of disabled anglers in the Lake District this summer.

Charlton, who won the World Cup with England in 1966 and later managed the Republic of Ireland in the finals, has teamed up with former Carlisle mayor Alan Toole for the occasion.

The event, which will cater for 80 disabled anglers, takes place at Esthwaite Water, near Hawkshead, on Wednesday, June 27, thanks to sponsorship from Cumbrian businessman Brian Scowcroft.

Mr Toole, who got to know Mr Charlton through their mutual interest in fishing and shooting, said: He has hosted similar events up and down the country for many years he came to one near Longtown about 10 years ago.

He said he would be delighted to come along if we could find a suitable venue and some sponsorship.

Thanks to Brian Scowcroft we now have both.

The fishing will be free and there will also be a meal laid on for those who take part.

However people will have to make their own way there. There will be a competition and prizes but it is more about having a good day out and people dont have to know how to fish to take part. To enter the fishing event or for more details contact Mr Toole on 01228 530681.

Brilliant Idea it's just a shame it's so far for a days pleasure fishing, even if it is with a legend
