the patern & size depends on bait, species & venue.
for punch wide gape power b/less 24-16 dependant on punch size.
hemp,caster,tares & maggot wide gape canal /seed 22-16.
worm & corn crystal chub 16-10

Mine has to be a GSP Raptor in a 10.

What a question and certainly a thought provoking one thumbsup.gif

Good choice waxlion, the 611's are also a favorite of mine.

Yes what a question. And I'm sorry to say what a stupid one. As an all rounder I use hooks from size 20 to 1/0's both eyed and spade end as well as doubles and trebles.

chill out go fishing

I feel a hook, if it is sharp I use it. As long as it catches fish who am I to care. (not being an expert mind)

C'mon though John, you've got to make a choice which ones to leave behind icon_smile_big.gif

Drennan Team England carbon barbless, best allround hook on the market IMHO.

esox - we gotta get you moved up into the modern world.

Rigging soft plastics with a bait of any size (like an 8" worm or a nice 6" grub) will call for more like a 4/0 or 5/0.

I do agree though that the question could not be really answered by any all-round angler. I'd hesitate to say I was going to settle on any hook and would probably have to pick a 2/0 but that would eliminate fishing for many species. OTOH, the idea of a 50lb catfish on a #10 makes me cringe.

Now patterns are a different story. I could cheerefully stay with Kahle's. Not ideal in every situation but certainly good for most. Gamakatsu or Owner either would be fine.

you got me there newt I forgot all about them rubbers.
Lets be serious now HOW can any angler use only one size of hook. The examples are endless single maggot double maggot both require different sizes. This post as well as the post concerning floats is demeaning to all anglers and the teaching that has been passed down for many years.
To be a good angler demands a varied approach. Or do we fish a 2bb stickfloat on a 100 acre lake with a size 6 hook and a single maggot when fishing for roach.
What will the next question be "if you could only use one line what make and breaking strain would it be".
Come on now if we must post questions let them be realistic at least.

chill out go fishing

Couldn't agree more with John,
Topic has nothing to do with fishing, should be in Play Room or Club House for a laugh!
Which vegetable would you eat if you only had a choice of 1?
Thankfully , we don't ,so what would happen if there were no hypothetical questions?
If you read the earlier posts, some excellent hooks were mentioned, BUT for specific purposes.
Waxi quotes 611 Ks, but Giles earlier in a reasoned post gave it an anti in the shallow stakes ,due to reflection!
I never saw Martin use a 24 on his Pike set-up!
I personally have several favourite hooks, but want to learn their values and disadvantages for given situations! so I'll discuss these happily with any sensible scenario presented.
After 3 marriages, for God sake don't somebody post
'If you had to marry just 1 woman, Who would it be?
and if you do, Get it off the Fishing Forum Page!

Cant pick one hook but the hooks i use are ESP raptors for carp fishing/hair rigs,Kamasan animals when the whole of the hook is covered because i dont like using silver hooks unless all of the hook is covered by the bait and Drennan carbon chub upto a 12 for the pole and waggler fishing.
Sorry but i just cant pick one hook
