Would using a polystyrene disc not be dangerous if a fish were to swallow it? See tip 1

If the fish did take the polystyrene in its mouth it would probably just blow it back out. Bottom feeding species are always sucking up and blowing out bits of debris while they sift through the bottom layers looking for food particles, it's principally how they feed.

Spot on. Watching my tropical fish feeding, the cyprinids like barbs, feed by sucking in particles and if they aren't food they quickly eject them.
