One of the F Keys, F8 at a guess, goes into safe mode??

That's to be pressed on start up.

start/run then type msconfig into the box and click ok, click the startup tab and untick all the rubbish

or download ccleaner which does the same [:T]

when your machine is fully logged on and on the windows desktop go to Start, click run and in the run box that comes up type

msconfig

This brings up the system config dialog box. Along the top are some tabs, one of them being startup. You can untick the programs you don't want to start up. Obviously don't start unticking things that you aint sure what they do but I'm guessing you know that anyway mate.
