Well, I was all set for a roach session this morning on our little river Torne near Belton when the heavens opened. And did they open ? Sideways rain. What the devil ? Who has sideways rain ? I poured myself a coffee and gave it 20 minutes but, it didn’t look like it was even thinking of stopping. Grrrrrrrrr. All that liquidised bread I did last night as well ?. Not to worry. Coffee drank so, where else is there where I can fall out of my van and fish ? A little pond of ours not too far away at Black bank. That’ll do for a couple of hours I thought. On entering the fishery it dawned on me just how much of a nutcase I am. Who is daft enough to fish in this ? Oh yeah, me ! All the pond to myself. Surprise surprise. Not a lot of fish in this pond if truth be known and what you do catch tend to come out in summer. I set myself a target ..... two fish. Anything not bothered what they are. Because of the wind I’d only really got one option. The tip. I chose to fish a tiny Drennan maggot feeder with a 700mm hook length. The water unfortunately is gin clear. Fishing a couple of dead reds I got my first little tap an hour and half in. A tiny roach of about 2oz. Well, that’s a start. Then nothing for another hour when I got one of those bites you never know when to strike. Go on then ...... bump ..... damn. A bumped fish. I hate doing that. Another half hour passed when while sat feeding a robin my rod nearly got pulled in. I lifted into what I thought was a little carp but, when it arrived at the net it was a decent Perch of around a pound and half. I’ll settle for that I thought. Next put in and another tiny roach followed by a tiny perch. It makes you wonder if the presence of a decent perch puts the smaller fish off. Another three roach followed before bites tailed off. So, although I didn’t get to fish my chosen venue today I did get out there and see a few fish. Roll on summer. Can’t wait ?
