Tried all different ways, from my experience I would say buy fresh every time.

I ask because I bought 2 pints of white maggots to go fishing with but didn't go and now they are turning to casters,
they will only be used to mix with ground bait... I've been freezing them but did wonder if anyone else did...

My experience of freezing casters is that the skins become very fragile and they discolour (blacken) very quickly after defrosting.
When adding to groundbait - an even higher proportion will burst and therefore float - which could well be undesirable.

personally - I'm happy to store casters in water for a week (for matches) or longer (for pleasure fishing) - other people prefer to store them dry and airtight.

Many years ago one of the angling mags carried a story about a good match angler that froze leftover casters in water in 2 litre pop bottles as I recall.

I cannot remember the angler's name but I think it sounded German or similar if that jogs anyone's memory.
