Hi all,
As you probably know I am a river man at heart, so can you help with these?
I went today to find out the currently fishable stretches on my Canal areas of the Trent and Mersey Canal.
Here it is looking up the lock , 1st section
Datafile.jpg
And downstream,
Datafile.jpg Datafile.jpg
Waxis kids came to greet me!
Datafile.jpg
And the boats werent moving.

2nd section up stream from lock

and downstream

Now the canal can only be fished on the towpath side, although they are all overgrown once you leave the lock area (easy to scythe down) so it looks as though no-one is fishing it?

Where do I start?
What am I likely to find?
I read of Geoffs (Neath) tench, Adams Royal pre-baiting and Daz can hit 12lb carp down from me, but I am lost!

Put a Spinner and a Plug through for 20 mins, but no joy!

Canal help please!

Cheers
Trev

Cracking looking stretch unsure which section your on but on the stretch just up from Shardlow (i've not fished it for over a year though) your looking at catching the following from the following line's:

Inside line
-- Gudgeon,Perch,Roach in that order at about 3/4mtr at bottom of near shelf.
Best approach last time was a walnut size ball of soft groundbait (supercup + matchblend is what i used) with a couple of squatt added every 2nd or 3rd fish with either single or double pinkie as hook bait.

Middle line (down the track)
-- Roach,Skimmers,Gudgeon,Perch in that order at about 7mtr.
Punch works well for the Roach & Skimmers when boat traffic is minimal.
Also big maggot over pinkie for the Perch & Gudgeon.
Aswell as chopworm & caster for the Skimmers & Perch.

Far line
--Bream,Perch,Roach,Tench,Carp not in any order as the Tench & Carp used to only come from the feature pegs.
The Bream,Roach & Perch can show up any where and to any baits fished either at the base of the far shelf to tight to the far bank dependent on the boat traffic.

I know the above is a bit rough but with out knowing the actual section it'll give you a starting point.

Spot on mate,
First section is Weston, 2nd Aston Lock!
I couldnt find the middle section at the Ukranian Camp, but later the Bailiff put me right and I was in the correct car Park!
That sections best of all he reckons, though it's wider as the Trent and the Canal actually combine for a short while here!
If I stay Canal bank side I can fish it during close season.
IF I get time, I am going to try it next week, but I am really spoilt for choice now (see Lakes Post!)
And what with Semer Weekend, have booked today and confirmed Ireland for 15th to 30th June! (Get back 5.00 am 1st July)
AND July booked for Barbel on the Dove, ending Elvington!
AND all the PAD Matches!in between
AND Dai and Gray talking about a Welsh Fish In (Not June 15th to 30th PLEASE boyo's)
My Magic Derwent Trout!
Hell it's a hard life LOL

Thanks Again MALC and I must make the effort to try your advice!

I have these appointments booked for friday
Routine Doctors 8.30 AM
Next call on Dental Lab to etch the tooth that fell out on saturday!
10.30 Opticians to replace (and have repaired) Glasses that broke at Drayton!
11.40 Dentists, have etched tooth stuck in!
12.30 collect Glasses from 1 hour promise from Opticians
ASAP routine Supermarket shopping for month (Elaine doesn't drive) (or eat until I get the overdue shopping lol)
ASAP collect bait for Saturdays PAD Match

So you can see, I try and keep these unimportant things all for 1 day, so as not to waste fishing time!!!

Cheers

Hello trev

the advice given by malc reminds me a lot of the royal canal
near where i live (well minus the gudgeon and carp),most of the
better fish in my area come from feature swims.

if you get a chance why not try a bit of prebaiting, i wouldnt
have any confidence in catching on my stretch without it.
high feed groundbait, casters, hemp and maggots shold do the job over
say two days and then fishing the third.i know that most people think the english canals are a different proposition to the irish ones , but often matches have been won with 4lbs of bits on my canal just days after i have had 40lbs of tench , all down to the prebait,
and if the stretch is not being fished you should have your choice of swims.

might be worth a try
Good luck
ADAM

Thanks people,
I'm a lot more encouraged and I will definitely try to fish it next week.
I spoke to a fellow Derby member at the Lakes today and he said the banksides are overgrown 'cos for some reason no-one fishes it in the River Close Season, but hit the Lakes where we were?
He said that late Autumn it does get fished!

Access is good, so I will have a crack at either Weston or the Ukranian Camp, Aston is a walk.
Thanks again, and I now have to buy a scythe lol!
