I've seen somewhere that light pike gear is ideal. Light wire trace is probably a good idea. I've caught big eels on mono and had them bite through the line. I suppose 2lb TC would be ok, if only to try and stop them hitting the snags and wrapping themselves up.

Try this.

hi andy & mookie
some of the best baits for eels are
dead baby mice or day old chicks these can normally be purchased frozen from petshops there used to feed snakes.
strips of liver, dead gudgeon, & big lobworms will also work
it is illegal now but one of the best baits used to be baby pigeons, sparrows ect but it is illegal to remove them from nests now.
With regard tackle heavy feeder rod upwards will handle them line i would suggest min 6-8lb, hook lenghs either braid or wire trace hook size dependant on bait size but need to be strong patern.
hope this helps

Mussel and fish strips also work well. I haven't tried peeler crab yet in fesh water, but it works well at the seaside.

Just purchased this lot from wmac and my local tackle shop yesterday...

With reel Okuma dynadrag free spool specimen reel
10lb ml..Maxima chameleon...20lb Amnesia plus Quicksilver braid for hooklink...size 4 barbless strong raptor hooks.....
Swivels...pike butt indicator ...bite alarm..forceps, unhooking mat..

in our matches on north level if we not on the bream we tend to target the tench, perch & eels with chopped worm & caster . a small eel on our drain is 1 -1 1/2lb .
sammy used to wipe the opposition in the junior matches just fishing for these.you get 3 eels for 6lb+ its a nice bonus at wiegh in.

i know marks looking foward to them when he comes[:D][:D]
