Fishing barby banks northampton at the end of the week pegs 1 to 23, never seen the place anybody help with best baits,methods ect & how its fishing.

What pegs are you on???

The straight (1-22 or 23) is around 14 metres wide and about 4' deep at the most ... winner can come off any peg but fliers are either end and the wide peg (about peg 10)

23 or 24 upwards to about 45 are not the best pegs (look good though) but the best pegs are on the islands. These pegs are not as wide as the straight but are full of fish ... and snags!

The Marshes are the 'add-on' pegs to the fishery and are basically the same as the pegs on the straight APART from the Jungle pegs ... these are full of snags (even more than the Islands) but are full of fish!

Take all baits ... corn/maggot/bread/pellet/meat and don't ignore the surface as they do like their bread on the top!

This time of year a good winning weight can be 50lb+ but most of that will be the later stages of the match

(it's mostly carp with some carp and even the odd carp ... seriously, there are plenty of silvers but you won't win with them - mid range elastics should be ok unless you're near the snags but most of them have died back so plumb up carefully)

We fished the Marshes last Sunday and 70lb+ won ... and it didn't fish well due to the cold wind []

what area fishing the best at the moment as we have a choice of which pegs to fish, we have pegs 12 to 23 now but can change if we want.

Personally, I'd have the pegs 1-12 as these are wider then the higher no's and are more even (fish wise) ... the pegs in the higher no's (after the wide peg .. 10 I think) get quite narrow and aren't that good, but the last couple on the straight are very good []

One thing to look out for, if it rains, some of the platforms are like sheet ice and are not very level ... AND if you've not been there before, there is a very high and steep bank directly behind you which is a pain when shipping back the pole []

Fish the middle first (near the lillies if they're up yet) then below and on the far ledge (it's very shallow over there but that's where the fish are).. there are some big(ish) mothers in there so no messing about with black hydro [:0] ... take some bread and cup some in on the far side (when the ducks have gone) and wait for the slurping then fish shallow bread or maggot[]

If you're on the wide peg (10 I think) put a small method/bomb over the far side and hold on - any of the early pegs can win the match and you should be looking at 40lb + (it should be more though)

Do you think we would be better off down the bottom end, on google maps it looks a bit newer and with better banks as a few of the lads are new to pole fishing and might struggle with the high bank

The steep bank runs all down pegs 1-23 (the straight) albeit the bank isn't as steep on the higher no's []

If your guys struggle to fish the long pole (and it is a pain - but we're used to it) then fish the middle and the near margins, you will catch but you really need to get right over so, maybe, chuck over a small bomb but beware of the trees! [:0]

Fish the long pole but feed via the catty as, I guarantee, if you use the pole cup it will be empty before you get there (it's a real pain - we use the pole cup but ship out at a 45 degree angle as this is a lot easier than going stright out AND you can feed under the trees - if you use the catty then you have to fire into the trees and your feed is dispersed)
