The annual zander cull on the oxford canal, between Coventry and Napton, has concluded today. One very interesting occurrence is the continued capture of barbel. The picture is of one we caught last year on the same canal and was assumed to be an anomaly. This year we have caught three. Obviously they have be stocked by someone but why? Why would anyone put such a species in an all but unfished section of canal?? Conversely, the silver fish appear to be on the increase especially juvenile bream. I even saw four anglers. I have never seen an angler on this 20 mile canal section in 8 years - must be improving.
