I went back to my local estate lake, Himley Hall in Dudley today in search of Tench. The forecast was heavy cloud all day which turned out to be right, so good conditions I thought, and the rain held off until the end of the session when it started to drizzle as per the pic of my peg below.

I thought it would be nice to get the same peg I had a load of Tench off a couple of weeks back so got there early. Gates are meant to open at 7 but the last few times I've got there at that time, people have already been fishing, so I made it there at 6.30am, only to have to wait until 7 for the gate to open. I'd also been given the wrong combination code for the closest car park so had to walk quite a way. I was relieved when I got the peg I wanted and started fishing for 7.45am.

A short wait for the first bite and fish where fizzing all over the place.

As you can hopefully see from the times and the pics, it wasn't exactly bite a chuck after a promising start, and the size of the fish had started to tail off.

Then my 8th fish at 12.51 put up a decent fight and had a decent profile so I decided to weigh it, this was the only fish I weighed today at 5lb 8oz and probably the biggest.

8) 12.51pm (5lb 8oz)

The session picked up again eventually before tailing off again. Pics below.

So after a run of bites it seemed to go a bit quiet after this and I had to wait until 16.36pm for the next fish! At least the last few were a good stamp.

It was at this point when I said I wanted 20 fish and I was going home. I say fish, I mean Tench, as I'd had a few Perch too but don't really count them when catching lovely Tincas!

So the next bite was a bite of a weird one. The fight even weirder. Couldn't work it out until I saw the fish. It held its position, stirring up a load of bubbles on its way. Line didn't really do the typical zigzag thing but it was certainly an Eel. I'd call it a proper Eel too, not a bootlace... and it would have been about 1.5lb.

It had now started to drizzle, but I was determined to get the 3 more fish I needed to get to 20. It had already been a long session so I was hoping sooner rather than later. Luckily, I think the Eel had almost 'raked' my peg for me and few more Tench showed up in quick succession.

20) 18.42pm

So that was it for the session. 20 Tench. Mission accomplished. I fished for 11 hours so I'm not going to make out it was always hectic fishing. There was a lot of slow periods in the day whereas when I caught 27 it was pretty much steady throughout the day. I'd also say the fish were slightly smaller this time too, with a fair few 3s, mostly 4s, and maybe a couple of 5s.

Once again apologies for the copious amounts of Tench pics but I'm always going to photograph fish like these as I love to document them so I can look back at what I caught.

I probably could have carried on catching after that Eel seemed to bring things back to life again but I'd fished for long enough to get those fish anyway, and it was starting to drizzle a bit heavier. That and I have a cousins wedding to go to tomorrow after work, so glad to be home safe after a good session!

Cheers all. Funny thing is it's well underfished for Tench. My mate would kill me if he found out I was publicising it as he reckons it's one of the best Tench venues about, for numbers reasonable sized fish, and he likes to keep it under his hat. What I like most about it is the clear water, can see the fish as you're playing them! Even if it has a bit of an algae tinge this year which is probably why it's fishing so well.

Another stunning bag of tench there mate. Thatโ€™s three years worth of tincas for me! Iโ€™ve been to Himley Hall, as a kid for a fireworks display, not to fish. I wish I still lived in the area so I could have a go for them.

Cheers all. The one bailiff reckons he's seen Tench to 10lb out of there, but speaking to other people, you know they're like... they will say that's a 6 when it's really a 4. Fishermans tales. But I live in hope. I generally wouldn't mind if a few extra people fished it as long as they fish it right and have a few fish, as I can imagine half of people that will try it will write if off if they don't catch and for various other reasons, it's a bit of a 'rugged' venue with lots of weed, although less this year.

Great session, is that on the float or a feeder?
Cheers mate. All on the feeder. Maggot feeder helicopter rig, but I probably could have got them on a big waggler and corn as about 25m out. My mate reckons corn works better later in the season for some reason though.

Zerkalo you're gonna be on first name terms with them tench if you keep pulling 'em out at the rate you are!
Another inspiring report if I may say so.
Interestingly I see from google maps the venue is less than an hours drive from me, hmmmmmmmmm................

Nice one. If you're anything like me, I like to go and check out venues before I fish them but it's pretty self explanatory when you get there. You have to call the number on their website to get the code for the car park closest to the lake, again self explanatory when you get there, but they gave me the wrong code... apparently they change it throughout the year too. It's a seasonal thing for me anyway, I'll soon be on the rivers but can see this place tempting me back later in the year.

What an amazing session! They're like peas in a pod

Your place certainly gives Napton a good run for it's money.
