Wednesday night saw the final round of our three match Evening Series, held, as usual, at Dromonby Farm Fishery on the outskirts of Great Broughton in North Yorkshire.

Now as anybody who reads my accounts will know we normally dont have the greatest of luck weather wise at this fishery. Its generally either raining or snowing and it always blows a gale.[:(]

However yesterday we had sunshine and little or no wind - as a lovely, warm day gave way to an equally pleasant evening.[:D] We were back on the smallest pond for this final round, the fish having more or less completed their annual spawning process.

Only six fished this match (isnt it strange how numbers always dwindle at the end of a series[:p]) - Phil was well out in front with a perfect two points, Bez was three points behind with Hish being a further three points adrift although he was in pole position to claim the trophy as the highest placed club member.

The draw saw Rick in corner peg one, Dave in front of the overflow on peg three and just to his right Phil on peg four. Bez was on the opposite side of the lake on peg seven with Hish drawing the plum peg behind the island. John made up the sextet on peg nine; the opposite corner to the one Rick had drawn.

Whilst tackling up there were fish cruising about and head and shouldering all over the lake, with lots of knocks and splashes coming from the reedbeds especially those nearest Rick and John. It was just to be hoped that the fish would get their heads down once the sun started to set and the temperature drop.

Rick was the first to see some action fishing just over the reeds to his left he snared a decent sized carp that decided it much preferred the reeds to the inside of his keepnet and promptly snagged him up leaving Rick with no option but to pull for a break.

Bez had begun as he finished the previous match plundering the lakes stock of small roach & rudd. They arent as numerous in this lake as the lake at the car-park but are generally of a slightly larger size. Phil, after twenty minutes or so trying to catch a proper fish decided to follow suit.

John was, as usual, fishing with cat-meat he was biteless fishing out into open water but fishing down his own bank towards the reeds he started getting some indications until after 45 minutes or so he snared a carp of a pound and a half or so he then proceeded to lose three on the bounce[:0] two got into the reeds before he had chance to do anything about it and the hook pulled out of the third cos he gave it too much stick to prevent getting snagged up and losing another rig.

Phil & Bez were picking up odd small carp too although the elastic and rigs they were using to catch the small roach & rudd were seriously undergunned when it happened. Both lost a couple due to hook pulls although they may well have been foul hooked.

Mike came down for his customary stroll with his usual helpful words of encouragement after annoying Phil for a while he plonked himself down next to Dave who immediately caught a carp of about 3lb odd.[;)]

Hish behind the island had a slow start but then found a nest of carp just off the end of the island he was getting plagued by small fish pecking at his method feeder and liners though so I told him to sit on his hands and wait for the rod to get dragged in. He was only fishing in about a foot of water and bites when in that sort of depth are always vicious affairs. He got three in three chucks (including a lump of about 6lb) before losing one and scattering the remainder of the shoal. It wasnt until his girlfriend and friend (the cheerleading section) turned up that he snared another couple.

John managed to land another two, which brought the final score to Fish 6, John 3 Rick was also on the receiving end landing one carp and losing two. Dave got a late fish in fact he was still playing it as I shouted time at 9.30. The winner was gonna be one of Hish, Phil or Bez with anybodies guess whod clinch fourth.

Ricks single carp and a handful of rudd was good enough for 6th place weighing 4lb 2oz

Daves late carp helped his total to 7lb dead and 5th spot

It was a story of what might have been for John the three fish he landed going 7lb 4oz.

Phils collection of carp, roach and rudd (some quite chunky specimens of the latter) pulled the scales round to 12lb 4oz.

Hish had the most carp, hed lost a couple too, but the five he did land gave him a total of 12lb 11oz

Bez started fishing for the bits before Phil and I think that just gave him the advantage as he weighed in 14lb 5oz for 1st place.

The final standings in the series:
1 Phil Noble 5pts
2 Richie Bezemer 6pts
3 Hisham Ahmed 10pts
4 Dave Jackson 16pts
5 John Micklewright 18pts
6 Rick Britton 19pts
7 John Sharkey 20pts
8 Dave Watts 21pts
9 Pat Sharkey 23pts
10 Paul Trattles 27pts

Hish was the top-placed club member, so thats a new name on the trophy after Johns won it for the last three years. Next match on this venue is another evening match on Friday July 9th.
