Following from the pie & peas thread do you mushy pea fans use tinned peas or make you own?

If homemade what is you recipe of choice? I cook frozen peas then bash 'em with a masher. Depending what I am having the mushies with I'll stir in a teaspoon of mint sauce.

We usually keep a bag of frozen mushies in the freezer, look like normal peas but go mushy during cooking. Failing that, a can of mushies with added mint,.

Mushy peas should be Marrowfat peas.
Only the likes of bloomin' Hestontall mess about crushing garden peas. :devilish:;)

My mum used to make them by soaking dried marrowfat peas overnight and then cooking them in the ham water.
Couldn't stand them as a kid, love them now along with sprouts and petit pois.

Soak marrow fat peas in water overnight adding a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda.
Drain, place in pan, half fill pan with water, boil and simmer until mushy.

If they're right they'll be mushy and sputtering away in the pan.
If too runny boil until thickened up.

Do dried marrow fat peas still come with the little tablets of bicarb? I love mushy peas but the next day I'm usually vanished to the garden due after effects lol

You can do similar things with broad beans or butter beans.

black peas on Bommy night it's the law and used to get them on the fairground , lovely with plenty of vinegar
Are they the same as Carling peas, served with sugar?

My missus loves them, mmm, vile things. :censored:

If the same people that like sprouts also like mushy peas that tells me all I need to know as to why I have never eaten them.
