EU legal minimum sizes for fish species do not apply to recreational fishing after the EU reviewed the Common Fishery Policy’s Technical Conservation Regulation which came into force last week.

Does that mean that I can catch a Trout or Salmon of any size and keep it? Seems stupid to me.

It'll refer to minmum sizes for the taking of coarse fish for the table or bait, ie roach and bream, perch pike etc

It refers to sea fishing as the French and pretty much every country bordering the mediterranean take everything they catch to eat but it was left to the individual countries to modify the rule as they wanted and we did not as there are already UK size guides in place.
It does not apply to migratory game fish at all because within the 6 mile limit you must return them regardless.
