Following on fron the discussion about a Barney Rubble on another thread I've noticed a few folks naming their fish as In Dame Judy for Tench or Bernies... Bernie Burch for Perch and the like... any other names you chaps have heard of....????

gudgeon are known locally as gonks, Ruffe are Tommys and perch are burglars (in their stripes)

Wonky =Eel. Sergeant/stripey= perch. Gonk=Gudgeon.
Some of the ones I know.
A lot of people call Ruffe tommys. Carp= vermin?

Pommies. We used to catch them in the Lancaster canal years ago. I think the correct name is pomeranians or something like that.

I really can't be pestered with some of the newer nicknames, especially if they are born out of some kind of rhyming slang. Whoever started calling a tench a "Judy" should have been publically flogged before it got the chance to spread. I'm not overly fond of hearing barbel called "Berties" (and similar daft names for other fish) either. Descriptive nick names aren't as bad, snotties, slabs, bootlaces etc.
