Dropshotting on the canal yesterday.Using an orange shad 2".Caught quite a few perch but was surprised to catch two small pike..Both were hooked right in the edge of the mouth with the eye of the hook outside the mouth altogether.Got an idea that with the line above and below the hook being tight,the pike were actually pushing it away as they bit down.No doubt that had I been using a jig they would have taken the lure further on and bitten me off.Be interested to hear any other notions? Oh,and l wasn't using wire as pike are very scarce om this stretch. Cheers.

It's quite possible that the pike were just nipping at the shad tails and were just catching the hook... The fact you've had 2 pike would prompt the use of at least an up trace in future..

Most takes on jig happen as jig falls (line slack) so it takes longer to feel the bite.
With drop shot you are in contact with lure almost all of the time.
