| DISABLED |
| Phillip | Suggestion Received: Is it possible to include a disabled search in your ALL FORUMS folder,or any of your OTHER folders that could give and receive messages from disabled anglers? Otherwise, could you introduce another catagory in your selection of folders marked DISABLED? This could include information about disabled matches, Fisheries that are wheelchair accessable and holiday sites with wheelchair access. It would be very good if the new folder would also encourage mobile anglers to contribute information and advice to help the disabled members. Phillip pbinc |
| waxlion1 | WCA You are quite right in what you say, I should not tar everyone with the same brush, and it just annoys the nuts off me when I hear people complaining about what they can’t do instead of homing in on what they can do. I never get complaints from my son…..ever! On the PJ front PJ (Peter) weighs in at around 18/19 stone and I have helped him to reach places that he wanted to fish not only the places he could easily reach. One example is he wanted to fish the Severn at Atcham (hope I spelt it correctly). The one swim he wanted to fish (cos he’s an awkward sod) was down a 12 foot shear drop, but we managed, don’t get me wrong it was by no means easy but we made it happen, wheel chair tackle bait brolly kitchen sink the whole nine yards, why? Because he wanted it to happen. Waxlion1 |
| Phillip | Thanks to all the members that have taken intrest in my suggestion for this Foruum for Disabled anglers. Lets hope we can get enough intrest for it to take off. I know myself that it is not easy to get a wheelchair and fishing tackle to an accesable swim. pbinc |

| Phillip | I must say that PJ.is very lucky to have someone like Waxlion 1 around to take him fishing. There are a lot of disabled anglers like myself that have to get themselves and thier fishing tackle to the swim they want to fish with only a wheelchair or electric buggy to carry it on, as it is there only means of transport. If I want to fish the canals at Bow for example I have to get on a bus with my tackle and have to change at Stratford to get on another bus to Bow. You want to try doing that, and I am sure that many disabled anglers all over the country have the same problem. Tight lines Phil[:)] pbinc |
| WCA | Waxlion1 To say you have never found a fishery you can`t get on with a wheelchair is a very bold statement.Sometimes being in a wheelchair not only means losing the ability to walk but in some cases people have very little if any balance.I`ve fished all my life(last 4 years in a wheelchair due to a broken neck)and I cannot physically get to half the places I used to fish even though I am still pretty fit.Even with assistance some waters are just not accessible in a wheelchair.I don`t know the extent of PJ`s disability so I cannot comment but I think you will find there are a hell of a lot of anglers in wheelchairs that feel quite restricted to where they can fish. Most people I know in `chairs DO think of what they CAN do and not what they can`t.You can`t categorise everyone into little boxes.Wheelchair users all have DIFFERENT levels of disability. Dave |

| pjroberts31 | Hi All Yes I am VERY LUCKY to be able to go fishing with Wayne. (WAXY) He is one of the most genuine blokes you will ever meet, he will do anything to help anyone nothing is to much trouble, he’s a real DIAMOND. At the time of our river Seven outing I was a real FAT ”!”£$%^ weighing in at 25 stone, getting down the bank was the easy part, I slid down on my bottom, getting back up at the end of the day was the hard part, by now I was in rather a lot of pain and starting to seize up a bit. Wayne pulled me back up the bank, (he’s open to offer for work, MOBILE CRANE) how I don’t know, I don’t even think he knows where he got that from. Another fishing trip was to Burton Mere, me being the pain in the a£$& that I am I decided near the end of the day that I wanted to go somewhere which looked easy enough to get to, Wayne took all of our tackle over and came back for me, we first came across a foot bridge with 2 steps up and 2 down to Wayne no problem, then we came across a very narrow bit of path to narrow for a wheelchair to Wayne no trouble a little voice came from behind me hang on a minute, before I could argue I was up on one wheel and moving rather quickly towards this little obstacle. He then explained to me that ¾’s of my wheelchair was overhanging the lake, one slip and there would have been a hell of a splash. I know that I have gone on a bit there, but that is only a fraction of what Wayne does for me when we go Fishing, I’ll never be able to repay him never. THANKYOU WAXY THANKYOU MATE PJR31.... |
| MALC | As most know i'm not disabled but help out with Rugby Disabled AA as their helper come dogs body. Now i don't want to stir up any trouble but Robbo you appear to be having a go at the BDAA for no real reason other than they would not go along with your ideas or thoughts.[?] Firstly if i'm correct you were active with the NFA till you fell out with them and went to the then Angling Link (now BDAA)[?] Where you then fell out with them and now are again active with the NFA and anti BDAA [?] Instead of trying to pull all elements of the disabled angling fraternity together all that appears to be happening is your trying to push a bigger wedge between each group. I may be wrong and if so i apologies but thats the way it reads to me [?] I wont mention what my views are regards the NFA and the way they treat disabled anglers as i've shouted them loud and wide in the past suffice to say they dont do what the average person on the bank wants and are way out of touch of the anglers i know. | Robbo | Hi: Dirk. It is well known that I have little confidence in Angling Link or the BDAA as it is now known. However I do appauld people like yourself who are at the grass roots of angling ie club level and not sitting in some ivory tower, knowing little of what is going on. So guilty I may be of many things, but one is not giving credit where it is due.So keep up the good work. As always I hope to see everyone in July. Robbo |
| dirk | Hi Robby after reading your posting I was very confused? Let alone new Disabled Anglers such as Phillip coming on to the scene. I was perplexed in what crime I had committed in offering help and advice to my fellow disabled angler. Three years ago I found a charitable organization called the BDAA and found they were there as a champion, for all disabled anglers, the more I got involved, the more I found that those involved with the BDAA had a passion and the determination to help their fellow disabled person. They are also guilty, of wanting to offer free help and advice Discriminating against people by denying them access to society and sporting activities will only be stopped if those being denied these opportunities have a big enough voice. And I feel that by joining the BDAA I am helping to achieve these objectives. If this is also a crime then again I am guilty. You cannot slur the reputation of a charity or the people that voluntarily work within the charity, without understanding firstly what they are doing, what they wish to achieve, and the background of the staff I personally before my disability worsened, used to voluntarily help Disabled/blind children in disabled schools. At present the BDAA run a children's day. And in the future wish to broaden their involvement with Special schools. Others that have got involved with the BDAA have brought their expertise in various areas of disability. And this will continue as others come on board. The BDAA have asked me to clarify that we receive no government funding Robby, and function only on charitable donations, and the good will of their representatives. The Governing Bodies who receive funding for angling are the NFA, NFSA, S&TA. The BDAA have a wide-range of angling activities including Sea, Coarse, Game & Specimen of which competition angling is only 10% and all are under represented in the main stream. I as a competitor at the South Cerney Festival and I know that many other competitors are also BDAA members, have nothing but praise for you and your helpers, in creating a marvelous day, which is enjoyed by all, and that goes for the BDAA. You say (if it's not broken leave it alone) but until disabled anglers all over the country, have access to participate in their sport, in comfort and safety it cannot be left alone. Again Guilty. |

| Robbo | Hi: Dirk: I see angling link are at it again, yes that is what I am saying the bdaa was set up by a few bodys and never asked any members whether they wanted it or not, I would not call that very democratic would you?. I also wish that both representations angling link and nfa would get their act together, maybe its not just you two but the sports council also. After a long debate with a top representitive from the sports council, he informed me that the nfa was the main body handling Anglers with Disabilities, now you say that it is the bdaa or what ever, what I would like to know is: who receives the money that is issued each year for the advancement and development of the Disabled Angler,? I have not seen it yet, For new Disabled Anglers coming on the scene It must be very confusing for them, Please, for godsake if it is not broken, leave it alone. Tight Lines Robbo ([?][}:)]Robbie) |
| dirk | Hi Phillip, my name is Dirk Williams. I am also a disabled angler, and the (east midlands) Regional Manager for the British Disabled Angling Association. The BDAA is a registered charity No: 1074729 established to develop and promote angling opportunities for disabled people in the UK (Website: www.bdaa.co.uk). Within the website you will find the contact number of the Regional manager in your area; he will also be a disabled angler, and will be only too willing to give you any help and advice you require. And that of course goes for any disabled angler around the country. The BDAA is also in partnership with English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) The English Federation of Disability Sport is the official, national umbrella body responsible for the development of sport for disabled people in England (website www.efds.co.uk), empowering disabled people through sport! The BDAA have appointed 8 new Regional Managers in line with the EFDS structure, and are currently appointing 60 regional representatives. We are there to help, whether you are interested in Course (match), Course (general), carp, game, sea boat or shore fishing. My specialist area and responsibilities within the BDAA are Match fishing. The BDAA each year run a National competition, with eight qualifying rounds from all around the country, concluding with a final, which last year took place at Woodlands View (Worcestershire) These matches are always something special. They bring together anglers of all abilities, with wide-ranging disabilities, who are always willing to show others how they have overcome difficulties with their particular disability, in relation to angling. Dates and venues for this year will be available shortly. Membership is free, and details available on the website. I have been a member of MD's for nearly a year now, and have found the guys to be a very caring bunch, and always there to support disabled anglers. I am fortunate to fish against and take money off some of them occasionally. I would list them, but they know who they are (Limetree boys) and anyway the list would be far too long. One in particular had got that upset with being beaten week in week out, that he started taking a cuddly RED toy with him to cuddle. Recommending wheelchair-friendly fisheries is a hard thing to do. I found out things that were not immediately apparent to me until I started going out with wheelchair users, and seeing them struggle on terrain that I found easy on crutches. We are lucky at the BDAA because we have experienced wheelchair users that go out to venues and physically check that they are accessible before recommending them. There is a booklet available from the BDAA (Disabled Access Guide to Fisheries). This has been endorsed by the Environment Agency, and details can be found at www.bdaa.co.uk. Alternatively this booklet will soon be available to down load from www.efds.co.uk in PDF format. |

Brenkley in addition has excellent access to these pegs aswell. The Club has its own web sight www.wacac.co . Just one other point I noticed an article in The Sunday Sun angling section last week. The Disabled Angling Masters comes to the region in the summer. The venue will be the prolific Woodlands Lakes near Thirsk N.Yorks. Two semi-finals to be held in June with the final in August. Entry cost is £20 for the semis and £10 for the final. Full details can be had by writing Andrew Archer, 18 Haworth Close Monk Bretton, Barnsley S.Yorks. S71 2QH. Hope this is of some use. | waxlion1 | Disabled access? I understand the problem that wheel chair bound people have with fishing, as PJ (who has not been on MD for a while uses a wheel chair) and I have been to many different venues and never found a fishery that we could not handle. There are many types of disability not only physical, I know only too well, as my son has Downs Syndrome. At least when you are physically handicapped you have the ability to sense danger, my son doe’s not and therefore will probably never be able to be left to fish a swim on his own. If he’ll ever be able to fish at all? Instead of seeing what you can’t do, think of what you can. PJ and I have fished in Ireland for a week fishing any swim we fancied and we have fished many, many different venues and never worried about accesses. we just make it happen. Waxlion1 |
| Robbo | Malc. I quite agree with you about the NFA, But I think you are getting the wrong end of the stick, I was with the NFA for 13 years building up access and places to fish for the Disabled Angler along I might add, with a lot of good people, who gave there all for the project, We built up the regional officers mainly Disabled and Able bodied, also the Regional matches and the National championships going onto the International and finally the World Championships,It took some doing but we did, as for leaving the NFA,I did this because, after I rode my Electric Wheelchair from John-o-Groats to Lands End to raise money for Disabled Anglers and Handicapped children, they told me they would back this trip 100% yes you guessed it they let us all down so you see I dont back the NFA,as for Angling link then,I gave them all the help and my experience for the last thirteen years but all I saw was the copicat of what was done before within the NFA. It seems that both sides are the same, all I am looking for is a fair deal for my fellow Disabled Anglers, its not a lot to ask is it?, I just wish that both sides just might ask the Disabled Angler what they want and stop trying to make their decisions for them. There you are Malc, the full story, I think that everyone has their democratic right to have their say and vote for what ever they want not someone else making decisions for them,Me I am just Happy organising the SOUTH CERNEY NATIONAL FESTIVAL FOR ANGLERS WITH DISABILITIES, that is held each year for disabled anglers. Many thanks for your comments I hope this answers all your queries, and may I say Malc keep up the good work with the boys, I am sure they really appreciate what you do for them. | Phillip | The Lea Valley Park Waltham Abbey. The Lea Valley Park has a vast number of swims for disadled anglers, aproximatly covering the length of the river Lea, the disabled stands are moestly concreate and you can drive your car directly to where you want to fish. You can get a gate key from Waltham Abbey information centre for £10.00 and a season ticket costs £9.00 this year. When you apply for a season ticket they will send you a list of places that you can fish, this also includes some pits and lakes which you will have acsses to on your ticket. So any disabled anglers who want to fish on the river Lea this seems a very good deal as you can fish Dobbs wier which has Barrbel, Tench, Bream,Roach and Chubb. Which I have been informed are large. | Ian C | Hi Phillip, Three venues in/around Derby spring to mind as being suitable for disabled anglers... Firstly, Melbourne Pool right next to Melbourne Hall. There is a section of road (60 or so yards long) which is right next to the lake (about 20 acres). The wall is about a foot to eighteen inches high next to the road and the lake is on the other side of that. The depth is pretty uniform and rarely goes over four and a half feet, though this year it is rather weedy! Tickets (£5.00)can be bought from Melbourne Tackle and Gun (right next to the turn-in for the Hall). Further details from the tackle shop... 64, Church St Melbourne Derby Derbyshire DE73 1EJ Tel: 01332 862091 The next venue is in a Derby park and called Alvaston lake (£3.00 per rod). This is over 12 acres at a guess and is man-made (concrete bottom). There is a fairly wide path all the way round this lake and it is relatively close to the car park. There are no platfroms here, but the water level is only an inch or two below the path. The depth is fairy uniform at around three and a half feet. There are some big carp in here!! The other venue is another park venue called Markeaton park (£3.00 per rod), but this venue only has three platfroms specially provided for wheelchair use as far as I know. You may be able to get more info on fishing at these parks (not Melbourne pool) by contacting Derby City council? ... | Glenn Archer | If any of you live in yorkshire, and want to join a disabled club then give Yorkshire Tykes (www.yorkshiretykes.co.uk) a try. The website is in its infancy so not a great deal of info on it yet. They have both disabled and able bodied associate members. Disabled county matches and open type matches throughout the season. Best water for access in Yorkshire is Woodlands Lakes at Thirsk. ALL pegs are accessible with no exception, not like a lot of venues that have only so many or the odd one.
