This is a match organised by the Fishing Magic website to commemerate one of their posters who sadly passed away a couple of years ago,As he was an avid "pole" man it is a float only match. The whole thing is conducted in a very light hearted manner with much p#ss taking and good hearted banter, the weather was none to kind to us with wind and showers and a noticable drop in temperature after the last two glorious days (the sun came out as we packed up) MY MATCH?????????? DaveFrom Ray Day 2. bolingy lake. Met malc + geoff at 7:45 outside the tackle shop, went in to get the keys ( bolingy is offsite and you get a key for the gates to let ya self in) we were told “no keys until 8:00”, we stood outside having a fag and a natter when out walks a guy with a bolingy key in his hand along with a map of directions?? At 8:00 we got the keys and headed off, 15 minutes later we were looking at the lake. The sun was shining, the water looked good. We selected our pegs and proceeded to set up. After plumbing around I picked a flat spot 7mtrs out at the bottom of a slope that was 5½ft deep. I set up a ½g float on a .16 line to a .15 btm with a size 16 kammasan animal hook. I tipped in a pole pot of pellets mixed with a few casters and bits of meat and proceeded to set up my margin line. Just to my left was a small clump of reeds, 18” of water, set up a dibber float on a .17 line to a .16 btm with a size 14 nu hook ( more like a size 12 cos of the long shank) in went a handful of pellets and a ball of riddled meat. Picked up my 7 mtr rig, baited the hook with double caster in it went, bite straight away = missed it, then another bite and another miss, this went on for about 6 bites, definite bites but couldn’t hit them, then I got one, small (½ lb) mirror carp, I put a small cube of meat on the hook but still got the same problems, they were just nibbling the bait, malc informed me that he was getting similar fish and was using 2 tiny pieces of meat on the hook. 2 bits of meat went in and a small mirror came out followed by another one. I then swapped over to my margin rig, baited up with a chunk of catmeat and lowered it in followed by a small ball of meat. After ½ hour without any movement my float bobbed a bit then sailed away, I didn’t need to strike as my elastic was soon being pulled out of my pole, soon a 6lb mirror carp was in my net. On went another piece of meat, in went a small ball of feed meat and I sat and waited, after ½hour, nothing, no movement whatsoever. In went another ball of meat and I changed over to my 7 mtr line, out went ½ pot of pellets and casters, double caster on the hook, time for some roach I thought, shot moved so that my casters just fell through the water and out it went, no bites until my casters settled on the bottom, then only the same “nibble” bites off the small mirrors, this went on for about ½ doz casts, I put 2 small bits of meat on the hook and shortly after had another small mirror then another. Back over to the margin rig. Chunk of meat on the hook, small ball of meat chucked in, soon I was into another nice fish, an 8lb mirror was soon in my net. Rebaited with meat and put in again, nothing, no movement in the swim. I decided it was time for a brew, fag and a wander to see malc and geoff, I put in a handful of pellets with a small ball of meat, grabbed my flask and fag and went for a natter. Malc was catching steadily and geoff had got a whopper (he will tell ya himself) after a natter I went back and dropped in again with a chunk of catmeat, after about 15 mins I saw the reeds moving, soon my float was bobbing around before again sliding away, this time a 7lb common was mine. This was to be my way for the rest of the session, put in some feed, give time for a fish to find it and then hopefully catch it. Finished up with 4 small mirror carp, mirrors of 5lb, 6lb, 8lb and 8.10lb and a common of 7lb. Not quite the sport I had anticipated as last year geoff and myself enjoyed some amazing fishing but still an enjoyable day (and nobody did a trogg) By the end of the session we had noticed that the lake has now been fenced off (using chicken wire) to form in effect 3 lakes, we also found out that the lake had been drained and restocked (for the festivals) with approx 200lb of fish per swim. I cannot help but wonder “where have the roach, tench and big carp gone” have they been used to stock the new lakes at w/acres?? Why has the lake been split into 3?? Surely if you are good enough to get to the festivals you must be good enough To draw the fish into your swim and not need lots of small “stockies” fenced in?? Malc went for a walk around the lake during the day and quite a few people were struggling to catch, it appears to me that they have restocked with the small mirrors only for the festivals??? Day 3 sycamore lake. Tues morning saw thunder and lightning, high winds, rain, generally not a nice day. Spent the day sorting out tackle and bait and bits and bobs. At about 4:00 the rain etc eased off , 5 mins later I was standing on the very muddy banks of the lake. The wind made it nears impossible to hold a pole at 6 mtrs let alone 13 mtrs to an island. As I was only going to get a couple of hours in I decided on just 1 margin line (good chance to try out my margin pole). Just to my right was a big patch of reeds, plumbing up I found 3½ ft of water, set up with a ½g float on a .16 line to a .14 bottom with a size 18 animal hook. Fed 1 pot of pellets mixed with some casters and a few grains of corn, double caster on the hook and in it went. First cast brought me a skimmer of about ½lb, then another and a few more, loose feeding ½doz casters every cast I caught steadily, skimmers to a lb, roach to a lb and a couple of small perch, I changed my hookbait to a single grain of corn and as soon as it settled my float tore off in the direction of the next lake, elastic just kept going, then twang, it all came back. Next cast again with corn on the hook saw my float dip slightly a couple of times then slowly slide away, a lift on my pole again saw my elastic shooting out, this time I managed to turn the fish and the bring it under control, I caught a glimpse of an orange flash under the water, some kind of koi I thought, a few minutes later I was slipping my net under a 2½lb golden tench, cool, the only other golden tench I have caught have only been about ½lb each and I must say it was a nice fish, lovely colour. In again went ½ doz casters followed by my hookbait, away went my float, out came my elastic, twang back in it came. I changed my hook for a size 16 (animal) and tried again, this time out went my elastic but this time it just kept going after a good ole scrap I was soon netting an 8.4lb common carp, with the rain getting heavier and the wind getting stronger I decided on one last cast, again my float dipped a few times then sailed away, this time I got myself an 8.8lb mirror. Time to pack up as the weather was now getting worse. Finished off with approx 2 doz skimmers, roach and perch, mirror carp of 8.8lb , common of 8.4lb and a golden tench of 2½lb. Most enjoyable evening (except for weather) and again, didn’t do a trogg. Day 4 python lake. To be continued later
rayJan and myself got to python at about 12:00 to find geoff already fishing (he had been there for hours) we set up in the swims next to him. Set up as follows, margin swim to my left infront of a reed bed, 3½ft deep, small float on .14 line to a .12 btm with a size 18 hook (animal) chucked in a small ball senses gold g/bait mixed with a few pellets, casters and grains of corn then left it while I set up a rig at 8mtrs. The 8 mtr rig was a similar set up only in 5ft of water, in went a pole pot of pellets mixed with casters. I decided to fish this line for ½ hour while I loose fed my margin swim with a few casters every minute, On the hook went double caster and in it went, seconds later my float dipped and a tench was soon in my net, next cast resulted in a skimmer, then another, I was continually feeding ½ doz casters into my margin swim (every minute) and by now I could see the roach queuing up for them so on went a couple of casters and rig was lowered in, my float didn’t even settle as a roach grabbed my bait as soon as it hit the water, this went on every cast, feed 6 casters pull out a roach, I lost count of how many as they were still coming every cast, I put a piece of corn on the hook (soaked in scopex) and hey presto my next fish was a tench, still loose feeding casters I carried on with corn, over the next couple of hours I had got myself plenty of roach, perch (yes on corn) tench, cruicians (up to 1½lb) and some mirror carp (which were 2/3lb, and looked like small footballs). During this time malc had arrived (and was being shown up by his daughter) , jan was catching steadily but her fish were of a bigger stamp, she was using 2 pieces of corn and landed some pretty impressive tench (upto 4lb). This continued for the rest of the session, almost a fish a chuck until 6:30 when we decided it was time to pack up as the wind was getting up a bit. Finished up with 60+ fish, from 6oz up to 3lb, jan finished up with 30+ fish from 6oz up to 4½lb. All in, a most enjoyable day (and yet again nobody did a trogg). true anglers leave clean banks original "clean banks campaign" slogan.

shaggaHi...enjoying the whiteacres reports as I fished my first festival there about 5 weeks ago. The reason that Bolingey was fenced off is because all the fish would congregate around the island and those that drew the "arms" had no chance of winning and would often blank. My experience at Bolingey was similar with definite bites that were difficult to hit...I found that the key was to leave all the bristle showing which stopped me striking at the dinks. If you do any more reports from Whiteacres I'd be interested to know what pegs you fish. Good luck for the rest of your visit.
Geoff PShagga, On Sunday we fished pegs 44 to 46, around the point and on Thursday pegs 27 to 29, from the bridge down one of the arms. I cannot see how fencing the lake off makes it fairer. The fish will still shoal up near the islands, in fact by the bridge there was quite a shoal of fish, both sides of the netting. I was told that the fenced off section round the Islands had much the better stamp of carp in them, and on the Thursday that area caught the most fish by far. I have been fishing at Bolingey for a number of years and have caught fish all over the lake. But then I am only a pleasure angler so my enjoyment does not seem to matter. I, and a few more anglers, will be voting with their wallets and giving W/A a miss. All the press releases over the last nine months have been about the 4 new lakes at Whiteacres and how they would be open this spring, with an access road to the lakes. I do not see any of them opening until next Spring. Still they have got plenty of fish, mainly from Bolingey I reckon. On Python we fished pegs 29 to 32. Jennys I am not too sure about, and Malc can tell you what pegs he drew for the matches. Geoff RSSG member - are you?

DaveDay 5 from Ray Day 5 gwinear lake Met up with geoff at 6:30, made our way to gwinear lake (about 10 mins away) it was a lovely day, plenty of sunshine, a little breezy but nice. On arrival we picked a couple of pegs in a sort of bay, to my left was a tree overhanging the water, that’s gonna be my margin swim I thought. After plumbing around I found 3½ft of water under the tree and at 10 mtrs I found the bottom of a slope giving me 6ft of water. 10 mtr rig, 1g float to .16 line straight through to a size 16 hook (animal), in went a pot of riddled meat with a few added casters. Margin rig, small Tyson float to a .17 line straight through to a size 14 hook, in went a handful of pellets, a ball of meat, a few casters and grains of corn. I put a small cube of meat on the 10mtr rig and lowered it in, fish were there, bubbles were coming up, the water was fizzing but no sign of a bite, after a while I rebaited with double caster, there was still fish activity in my swim but again no bites?, tried corn, small bits of meat, big bits of meat, went deeper (up to 6” on the bottom), shallower, tried allkinds but could not get a bite. Changed rigs to a lighter one with a size 18 hook, started getting bites but only sharp dips, nothing to strike at (geoff by this time was getting a few) again went through the various baits/combinations, different depths but could still only get sharp little dips on the float. Time for a change, I had been feeding my margin swim every ½hour while I had been out at 10 mtrs alternating between a small ball of meat and a few loose fed casters, on to my hook went a piece of meat, pushed my pole tip under the tree to get my bait in place and then waited, nothing, no dips, knocks, bubbles, nothing. Time for a wander to geoffs peg, after a natter, brew and fag (and being told that a “trogg” was not an option) I went back and started again. With caster on the hook I fed ½doz casters and lowered my bait in after them, hehe no trogg, I swung in a little roach followed by a few more then a few perch, then just as I was getting into it my float shot off towards the other end of the lake. Before I continue, I must say that whilst at w/acres I was trying out my new margin pole with hydro elastic in (freebie). The elastic kept going and going and going then it bottomed out and ping, gone, ( golly gosh I said) still at least I had gotten a bite off a biggie, in again went ½doz casters, double caster on the hook, a while later it happened again, this time as the fish tore off I really lent into it, threw my pole tip under the water and held on, it turned the fish into open water and I knew it would be mine, I was soon slipping my net under a 10lb mirror carp. That was my only carp of the day but I did carry on catching a few more roach and perch (and a gudgeon) Not many fish but again very enjoyable, and no trogg. Gray CatchpoleHazel Court, SE Llysworney, Nr Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan 21/05/02 well what a day, we didnt arive untill around 10:30, but intended to stay till dark and gary and myself where going for some ghost carp, and golden rudd. Gary as usual set up his feeder rod, inline maggot feeder to a 14" 4lb size12 hook, he also borrowed one of our 5m whips for the rudd. i opted for a groundbait feeder using Crazy black from sensas, loop method, and a kamasan size 12 hair rig 4lb hooklenth of 18" and for bait i used one peice of chicken mash and one peice of corn. i also set up a float rod, light crystal waggler, to a 0.18 hooklenth and a size 16 hook. with a single corn. we both started catching some nice rudd, on the float set ups, but the feeders where very lifeless, i had a nice tench of around 2lb, but that was it for my feeder all day. i had been fishing a ledge on the float all day, and catching some really nice rudd, but needed a cuppa, so i brought the float in about two foot from my rod tip, poured a drink and rolled a ciggy, i looked up at the float, and saw it rise slowly, then with no speed began to drift off, by this time tea and tobacco where flying about every where as i pulled into the fish, now, today for the first time in my life i chose to use the clutch, and boy was i glad, this fish just went and went, not fast, but slow very methodical, and there was nothing i could do to stop it, after around fifteen mins, the fish started to circle in front of me, and although i couldnt see it, i knew it wouldnt be long before it was in the net, at that second it decided to shoot off to the right into a small bed of lillys, and there it sat, then, nothing, no tugs bangs nothing, i was heart broken, i took the preasure off, but still nothing, then i walked to the other side of the lillys, and droped and increased the preasure, but still nothing, gary just looked at me, and walked back to his swim, and with that the lillys exploded and the rod was nearly pulled from my hand, i called gary back, now i was in real trouble the fish was in a corner beetween two lilly beds, i needed to get the fish out in the open, and after a little help it headed for the centre of the pond, after what seemed hours, we had our first glimps of the fish, i said to gary, if i land this i think its going to beat my record, by this time, nearly 45 mins had past, my arms felt as though ide been trying to stop Elton Murphy in his rally car, as im writing this my forarms are really aching, five times i had the fish on the srface, and each time gary nearly had it, it shot off again, on the sixth time, gary scooped and the fish was ours, all seventeen pounds of it, i was over the moon, gigling like a big girls blouse, i had beaten my personal best, 17lb spot on. later on, Gary and myself where having a bit of a competition going to see how many rudd we could catch, we had some really nice fish alot of them where hand and a half size really pretty, brilliand red and orange, by this time it was pouring down with rain, and as i had my brolly up i couldnt see gary, but heard him say AT LAST , i said you in, yes mate was the reply, he said its not a big fish, i think its a tench, a brief battle ensued and and the fish surfaced, it was indeed a tench, but what a tench, again both of us gigling like girls, i landed the fish for him, a wonderfull 6lber, gary will tell you all about it later. i also managed a ghost carp of about 6lb, and a lovely golden tench Two personal bests in one day, and some lovely fishing, and to be honest the place isnt fishing to frantically at the moment, this place has real potential, i like it alot. peterGray & Gary, Congratulations on your new PB's.Have to sat that all the fish seem to be in cracking nick. That Golden Tench whilst not the biggest is quite simply stunning!! Peter. Make Friends,Go Maggotdrowning.
Gray Catchpolecheers chaps, peter, the guys that run this place do a fantastic job of looking after the fish, they have a healing pond and tank that is used on any fish that has any markings cuts or anything you may think could be wrong, you just go and see them and they check the fish out, and take the neccasary action. its not the bigest fishery ive fished, infact i think its the second smallest, it has three ponds on one level, and a match pond slightly above, but it really is a nice place to be, on a freezing cold rainy day :D Dai, you can count on me if you need any helps sorting out a fish-in. rayexcellent reports and pictures gents, maybe that venue could be used for the welsh fishin?? true anglers leave clean banks original "clean banks campaign" slogan.
rayDay 6 bolingy lake Geoff, jan and myself arrived on another glorious day, quite hot even at 8:15 am. I noticed that geoff was proudly wearing a t-shirt with the welsh dragon on. I set up on a peg near to the bridge where I found 6ft of water at 10 mtrs, a margin swim containing a reed bed to my right and I could reach the island at 13 mtrs. 1st rig set up was for the island swim, 2½ft deep, .16 line straight through to a size 14 hook with a fairly big dibber float, in went a pot of riddled meat. The swim to my right was the same depth as the island swim so I decided to use the same rig, I fed a pot of pellets with a few casters + corn mixed in. At 10 mtrs I set up a 1g float on .16 line to a .14 btm onto a size 16 hook. I fed a pot full of meat with a few casters on top. Out went my island rig with a piece of meat on the hook, as soon as the float settled I started getting a few knocks (line bites) then a few dips then the float started getting dragged along the surface towards a clump of reeds, I struck, nothing, out again went another piece of meat, the same thing only this time I got a fish, a small mirror just over a lb in weight, changing to 2 small bits of meat I got ½doz similar fish in as many casts. I fed another pot of meat along with a pot of pellets and casters, I thought maybe I could feed off the smaller carp, I changed to my right hand swim and again caught a few small mirrors up to 2lb in weight. Alternating between the 2 margin swims I got some more small mirrors, all between 1+3lb. After a while I went for a walk to see how geoff and jan were doing, as I was talking to geoff, jan shouted me, “come and get this” as I went to her swim she lifted out an eel (about a lb), at least it was different (and was caught on double caster) after unhooking it I went back to have another go. There was a bit of fish activity in my 10mtr line, a few bubbles were coming up, I refed the 2 margin swims with more meat and dropped a piece of meat in at 10 mtrs, more dips and bobs but nothing to strike at, a change to a piece of corn brought me a common carp of 4lb followed by a couple of small mirrors. This was the way it continued for the rest of the day, swapping between all 3 swims I caught steadily, most of the fish were in the 1-3lb bracket with the occasional fish a bit bigger. Once again, a very enjoyable day (very hot one at that) and nobody did a trogg, ended up with 25 small mirrors up to 3lb in weight, + a common of 4lb, mirrors of 4½, 5, 6,6½ and an 8 lber, 32 fish in total. true anglers leave clean banks original "clean banks campaign" slogan.
MALCDate : 23/05/02 Venue : Stockton Reservoir Time : 11am till 4pm Today Dirk and myself fished at Stockton Res as we both got a couple of matches there in the near future. Dirk fished peg 43 and i fished peg 44. Both pegs are surrounded by reeds which go about 6mtrs out and had a depth of around 3ft. I fished 2 lines, 1 to the left and 1 to the right tight to the reeds. Bait wise i fished meat over pellet on 1 line and pellet over pellet on the other. The meat line produced 3 carp between 6lb and 10lb plus a tench of about 2½lb. The pellet line only produced 1 tench about 2lb. For a total weight of about 30lb As for Dirk's day i'll let him tell you what he done but i will say that his best carp was 13lb and he ended up with about 60lb+ to double my weight. But as normal the craick was good and at least this time there was no £1 side bet. Wait till Sunday Dirk when the £1 is back on the table !! I'll remember the camera one day and put some pictures up. dirkStockton reservoir Stockton reservoir Thursday saw Malc and myself, going to Stockton reservoir NR Southam, about four miles form Draycote Water, This lake had been taken over by British Waterways, about five years ago, and made in to a smaller version of Clattercote, or very small version of Drayton.where some of the maggotdrowners fished on Monday. Having 63 pegs we decided to fish on pegs 43 and 44. I Had planned to fish the maggot on the waggler for the Chubb, up in the water but after about an hour, and being plagued by the rudd, and Malc catching a Tench on the pole, made me decide that I too should try for the pole line. Malc started missing bites on the paste, and lost a carp, then I caught my first carp on the meat, which was around 3Ibs then malc had one slightly larger, then they really started to feed. I finished the day with 9 carp three in double figures the largest being 13Ibs good old malc had his scales with him, we estimated that I finished the day with approximately 60Ibs and poor old Malc had around 30Ibs which was an extremely good weight for him. Well he did have the excitement of weighing my fish, so that more than made up for it, wait for the comments he's at work, so I'll get away with it until tomorrow. Sorry All the fish were caught on the meat and fished up against the reeds, and Malc fished with a large quantity of green16 elastic, which we shall not mention, go on mention it, especially those that have taken his advise on elasticating their poles. Next trip out is at Sheepy Magna the Lime trees final match, in their spring series.
MALCDate : 26/05/02 Venue: long Pool (Sheepy Magna) Time : 9am to 2pm Today was a club match on our own pools only 7 turned up and it fished terrible. Personaly i fished Catmeat over Pellets to the far bank reeds with 0.14 direct to size 10 Mustard Method hook into 3ft of water. On the second put in i hooked a carp that went straight through the reeds (i think it's still going). Result from that swim was 0 but i did manage to strike upwards into a tree and trash a rig, (thought i'd say that before Dirk did). Also had a pellet line at 5mtr by some weed which was fished with a 4x12 float to 0.12 line and size 16 Animal hook. Result from that swim was 1 Roach about an ounce hooked cleanly in the belly. Result for the day was a D-N-W and as Dirk caught 2 Perch for about 6oz he collected the standard £1 side bet (again). Steve Wilson also fished but same as me only 1 fish (tench) for a couple of ounces and did not weigh either. Roll on Tuesday as i'm on a Carp Hole and hopefully i'll get me £1 back off Dirk. DaveFrom Ray: Friday Night Sycamore lake It had been raining on and off for most of the day (heavy) I sat waiting for a break so I could get out for the last time. At about 4:00 I got the break I had been waiting for, ten minutes later I was setting up on sycamore lake. I had with me ½ pint of casters some corn and a bit of meat, it was all that I had left and wanted to use it up. I set up 2 margin swims, 1st to my right at 6 mtrs next to a patch of lillys, 3½ft deep, .16 line to a .14 btm, small dibber float with a size 18 hook. In went a doz casters. 2nd swim to my left at 3 mtrs, infront of a reed bed, again 3½ft deep, .17 line to a .16 btm, big dibber to a 14 hook. In went a pot of pellets mixed with some casters, corn and meat. I put a single caster on my right hand rig and lowered it in, I was chucking in ½ doz casters every minute, the float did not even settle before shooting away, a nice roach of about 10 oz, then another one , then another, this went on for about an hour, roach up to lb in weight. (+ a couple of perch) I noticed that the reeds were my feed had been put in were showing signs of fish, I fed about a doz casters, put three casters on the hook and lowered it in, after a few minutes my float just tore off, a few minutes later I was slipping my net under a ghost carp of 5.4lb. I fed another doz casters and put a piece of corn on the hook (I wanted to feed the remainder of the casters) a few knocks later again my float shot off, this time I landed a mirror carp of 3.10lb, guessing that I had about an hour of light left, I decided to finish off the session on this line, with another piece of corn on the hook and a doz casters fed I waited again for a bite. A few knocks, then a dip then my float sailed away, to my surprise I was soon netting a golden tench, It weighed in at 3.6lb, with the help of a passing stranger I took a photo and put it back. By now, with the damp/rain my finger tips were starting to look like prunes so i decided on “last cast”, the remainder of my casters went in (about 2 doz) followed by my hook again with a piece of corn on, right away I got a few line bites then again it sailed off, my last fish was soon in the net, a mirror of 7.4lb feeling quite pleased with the session I called it a day/week. I had finished my week off with approx 30-40 roach + perch, a ghostie of 5.4lb, mirrors of 3.10 + 7.4lb and a golden tench of 3.6lb. All in all, not a bad week, I am now waiting for my next visit in September. Once again I would like to take this opportunity to say “thanks” to my fellow m/ds, geoff, malc + gemma (and familys) for making this week so enjoyable, I think we all learnt something from each other and enjoyed the company. That all folks……ray.
ZiptrevNice stuff Ray, Don't it take a time though LOL OK today was another disaster, but I went back and fished Glazebrooks Lake for 5 minutes before feeling unwell! But I took the opportunity to take these Pics of the Ully Gully Lake that is on the same complex as the previous 4! Canal shaped! and having lots of lilies And Daz tells me that it responds to Pike Spinning! Having done these, I decided since here, I would try a spin back on Glazebrooks. Lost 2 lures in 5 minutes! Went to tie on 3rd and found I had lost Glasses! THEN accosted for 4th time since returning to fishing in October by EA Bailiff! (Never once in 20 years prior to this, Is Mookie sending them?) However, Eat your hearts out chaps! This EA Bailiff was happy and giving out Freebies!!!! I am now the proud owner of the following! So, when I want to risk bringing my mobile out (shades of Wendy) I can be reminded at the bankside, from my freebie towel, the rivercall number for 60p per minute!(plus mobile cost lol) Ah well, just one of those days! Cheers Trev ZiptrevShouldn't happen to a DOG!
Ferret1959So that's where all the licence money goes Trevs'freebies. And wouldn't you have thought it should be a free phone number as we are doing the work for them??? Dave. dave@tjsangling.co.uk www.tjsangling.co.uk
NewtAh Trev - since you had a rough day on the water, thought I'd bring in a few photos from your recent catching days to trigger the fond memories. Tuckertown was the site of all of these. Location was where ever the boat happened to be at the moment. Trev in the stern catching fish and Newt in the bow guiding the boat along and catching the occasional fish himself. Not that you would call this lazy style fishing but it is certainly easy on the legs. And ole Trev did certainly catch some largemouth on lures. I think from this photo that he was sorta happy about this fine young fella. The reason a fairly small bass can take a fairly large lure (and the reason they call this sub-species a Largemouth). This one is slightly smaller than the one Trev is holding in the pic above. And a good indication why it is easy at times to lose lures. The stumps are where we were catfishing. Looks great once you get out of them doesn't it? Well, there are lots of others that are just below the water. The area was logged before being flooded about 50 years ago and the loggers didn't always cut things the same height. Trev lost a really nice catfish in the "clear" water within 10 feet of the boat (where the shot was taken). Turns out there is a stump there with it's top about 12 inches below the surface. Dang it!!! Newt Vail
ZiptrevDammit Newt! Over a week since I had to leave all that! AND the weather! Since my return I've faced nothing but Wind! Dropped last evening to be replaced by rain! Checked the water temperature on friday, reached 62 degs, 1 degree warmer than the air temperature! Thanks Newt! Happy memories and I wish I were still here! Yeah! I still got a few to report on! Time is the key! Thanks Again Newt, Cheers Trev ZiptrevShouldn't happen to a DOG!
ZiptrevNorm, Great stuff! I'm hoping that we have similar up there next Sunday! Can't be worse than this week surely! Keep taking that boy out, He wont forget it and I'm with mine again in 3 weeks and his 34th birthday was last tuesday! Dave Ferret, I don't know mate where the money goes! I posted the other day, Just how much does RiverCall add to the total? Its only Severn Trent that seem to have several 0906 numbers and a recent update has given 1 number to hear ALL the River levels on one number! This is not for us either, it means you may have to hang on longer at 60p per min. to wait for your required river! I suppose they must publish income, but it will be in the balance sheet 2 to 3 years AFTER we've spent it! I guess from your previous postings, you qualify for the disabled half price ticket? Well , me too, BUT, because I like to fish 3 rods for Pike, I'm back to paying £21 for 2 licences! (Mookie take note lol) Also, it gets up my nose that I can't buy over the Internet, but have to queue at the Post Office still and PROVE that I qualify! There are disabled guys out there, who struggle to get to the Post Office! AND where it goes? Mookie, Trogg and Mat are all asking the same! Cya August Cheers Trev. PS Towel size is only 12" x 18" , so it aint on those LOL Trev ZiptrevShouldn't happen to a DOG!

ZiptrevTuesday May 28 All Over! First I fished Marstons Pool, Barrow on Trent in A PAD Match! Drew peg 4(permanent 25) next to Mark Alderson, our Bailiff and the 'Mark' referred to in Archie Braddocks Diaries! Couldn't have been more helpful! Fished Waggler, 8ft deep (about Max for this pool)2 rods out. Fed pellet, corn and Pinky. Caught 4 carp , 2 Roach solely on Worm! No bites on anything else! Here's the Pool Match over, I wanted a big bait clearout, so drove a few miles (on way home) and set up on Cullens. Balled in all old groundbait and leftover corn ,pinkies, maggots, casters, meat!in shallow margin swim! Within 5 minutes had 2 Swans, 2 Ducks, 2 Grebe and a single Coot! all arse upwards clearing up my food!!!! Fished for an hour, 1 solitary 2 oz Rudd! Moved to Glazebrook lake, (30 yds) and put various Lures through for an hour or two. Result, 1 1/2 lb Pike, the smallest yet!!! BUT , He was superbly marked, No scars and very welcome! Look at this titch, hitting one of my smallest Lures! Returned to Cullens for last 1/2 hour. Dead! Packed away , phoned wife for pint on way home and joined her in pub at 10.50 pm when I arrived. Left home at 6.45 am, so you cant say I aint trying! keithGrand Union Canal,Castlethorpe 29/05/02 The weather was overcast with a hint of rain and the wind was light and but gusty in place when it did get up a bit. Vic and myself decided to practice for a forthcoming match next week.Vic fished caster and pinkies at the bottom of the far shelf.Myself fished up the shelf with squatts and pinkies with a rig set up for corn right across. First put in with the squatt and a tiny gudgeon and that kept going for about the first hour.Vic was getting a few indications on caster but only had a roach of about 3oz to show for it. A switch to pinkie saw a few perch and a solitary skimmer of about 4oz come to the net and Vic started to put a few fish together by alternating the caster and pinkies. During all this time no groundbait was fed by either of us and we kept just loose feeding our respective feed baits. Do not know whether the roach would have fed better with gb or not. What are your thoughts. Still we caught steadily throughout the day and had a reasonable net of fish although the fish were on the small size.I had approximately 70 fish for about 11/2lb and fish slightly less for about the same weight. A good practice with two different tyles both catching fish.Still do not know what to do on the day but will have to feed a caster line now as the better fish definately came to it. Keith
darrylkeith i don`t know about the roach feeding better if you would have added ground bait but on a canel i find if i use ground bait and fish away from it about 1 meter i catch a better stamp of fish....... darryl work`s for them who can`t fish

MALCNorm, It's great when the kids do well ain't it. Keith, Nice read, last year the Bream at Castlethorpe responded well to a bit of groundbait just at the base of the far shelf. Personally the mix i used was 50/50 Supercup & Matchblend with a few Pinkie's and casters in and fished red maggot over the top. Now my report. Date : 28/05/02 Venue : Match Lake Gilmorton Time : 10am till 3pm Guested on another Rugby Disabled match and this one was at Gilmorton. It's a small 45 peg match pool. Well it started to rain 5 mins before the start and stopped about ½hr before the end but the wind stayed all the time. I fished for most of the match on the method (free running) with various types of meat & pellet as bait. Got taps all day but only 2 positive bite's which resulted in 2 carp for 4lb 2oz and joint second. Dirk won with 1 carp for 7lb 11oz which was hooked in the last ½ hour of the match on pellet. And so the £1 went his way AGAIN. Well done mate Malc Fish with Friends @ MaggotDrowning.com
ZiptrevThursday 30th May, Looking ruefully at my feet, where my Jeans were already soaking wet from the feet to the knees, I wondered when I would ever learn! No Wellingtons in the car and reading my new 'Pride of Derby' Club ticket, I had decided to fish Highbridge Lake a 'It is suitable for disabled Anglers!' Well, Yes! The first 5 pegs are! The Car Park backs on to the lake, but the other 27 or so pegs require a walk and there is long grass in places, which, as it had been raining , accounted for my condition! I chose a peg at the northern end of the complex! 3 acres of water, with 3 pools connected by canal type interways, it is very attractive! but Shallow and as i found out, extremely weedy! As the wind had been blowing from the South ever since I returned from Newts' I reasoned thet , if Carp do follow the wind, they would be stacked up in 1 small corner! Only 2 other Anglers were on site as I set up at 10.30 am. Heres where I fished. As you can see, it is a beautiful setting and I fed loose cubed meat and corn close in to my left. Across at about 8m , I fed 8 balls of brown crumb, mixed with 1 can liquidised corn , half pint hemp, tin corn, some old casters and a few bits of meat. Finally, I fed a right hand swim, just on canal type connection far bank, with 3 balls of the same. The depth was only about 2 and i'2 ft close left and 3ft everywhere else! Water was chocolate and 60.5 degrees. In the wind, the air was only 1 degree higher. Here's another view. Then , I left the swim alone, whilst I went Spinning! After an hour of spinning, switching from red Mepps, to spinner bait, but mainly a yellow plug, I was back to my swim. Going two pegs past it, I put the plug through again and on the 3rd spin at last a take! Striking , I hit into a fish of guesstimate 3lb and he came splashing to the surface! AND equally as quickly, slipped the hook! It was 12.00 , so after a few more tries,(pricked! He wasn't having it again!) I returned, (to fish proper as some might say LOL) I found 4 major problems! 1) this 'B----y' wind It had increased yet again and was cutting through the channel from left to right, making casting difficult. 2)Weed, Every other spin, my lure came back dragging weed and my hook soon found the same. 3), The carved out platformed swim looked ideal, but the tree it was under, hung down to 11 ft! I must learn to look upwards! 4) Teepee! He'd sent his flaming mates again! If these things are under Crown protection and can only grace the Royal Banquet, can we have another gang of Swan eating Royals, or can Liz start on my lot? Lovely little family though, but Mum and Dad can reach my groundbait! I float fished and then put out a bomb with no success and watched an Anglers float on the far bank, to see hin using meat and getting nothing either. At about 1.30, I set up a dead bait rod, using roach on a small size 10, 1 single , 1 treble trace, as I did not believe there were 20 lbrs here. I used a buzzer on banksticks ,John! , and cast it well left, down the margin, so as to not cause line crossing problems. A visit from the bailiff on my 1st day with the new ticket didn't help! Firstly I had not signed the Ticket! (only had it a day!) Secondly, he reported that 'Last week an 18lb Carp and a 7lb Tench, today no one has caught a fish of any sort!' Trust me to pick today! Still, Zippy's are stubborn and I had fed these swims well! Also, they are idle and couldn't bother to pack up and move to some other (close) waters (or even another swim, no point if no-one else was catching!) At about 4.00 pm, the bomb rod went and I was into a small perch from the right hand swim! The bait was worm! I have had a small tub of worms that I bought from 'used tackle' before I went to Newts! Never fed them, but I am amazed how well these things last! A second followed, but that was it and at 6.00pm I went spinning again for an hour, again with no results! At 8.00 pm the opposite bank man packed up and passing me told me that he had just one line bite all day! I began to get small knocks on the feeder tip, (changed from bomb to small open ender) and as I couldn't hit them, put out the float again and was rewarded with a run of 3 small perch, again falling to 1/2 worms. And then the Zippy luck came good. I had recast that same little old Roach , twice during the session. At last a bleep! that I could not put down to wind (evening drop) or Swans (Gone off at last with landing net earache!) Gingerly, I pulled on my line, setting off 3 more bleeps! Nothing! Then I felt a small tug! Then a definite twitch! THEN a pull, the line indicator dropped off, a run , a Strike, and the pleasure of playing this fellow into the Swan bonking landing net! The fish was hooked perfectly, end treble in centre of lower jaw, single just in edge of lower lip. To me, well worth waiting for and at 9.15 pm, I had had a wait! The wonderful US Scales refused to respond at 1st, but a battery change solved that (500 hours NEWT?) and although he went to 4lb 2, his low was 3 13, so I'm calling him 3lb 15! Real pissed off though, look at the way he's eyeing me! Well, highlight of the day, and I packed up my conventional gear, lugged it back to the car (2 trips) and then, returning to the swim, leisurely made my way back, spinning at every peg! I locked the Highbridge gate behind me at 10.30 pm and arrived home at 11.15. I love these late light nights! Roll on the new season, when I will fish on after dark! Cheers Trev PS added bonus here, they have a resident Kingfisher! Twce I saw this magnificent bird flying along my swim! Love those little fellows Trev ZiptrevShouldn't happen to a DOG Edited by - Ziptrev on 31 May 2002 07:25:50 AM

Adam SHello great report as usual trev, those damn swans never learn do they, your nearly at 1000 posts now , wow thats a lot of writing. i was wondering what methods you fish on the erne , feeders . sidewinders and the like? any chance of pole to hand or stickfloat fishing? good luck ADAM
MALCKeith. Last time i got the £1 was back on May 9th but we will see this Sunday!!! LOL Trev, Great read as always. I can now even more apreciate how long it take's with pictures as i've just spent 2 hour's doing a report on the Match Results page. Malc Fish with Friends @ MaggotDrowning.com
NewtTrev - next time the lure response is that slow, try carolina rigging a soft plastic. Start with a large bait (maybe 8 inches) and drop down to 6 and then 4 inch if they aren't having the larger one. You have to really be awake to notice when you have a take (which may well be a very light "tap tap" even if the fish is huge. I'll make sure to include some suitable soft plastics the next package I send. And you can look on http://www.bassresource.com/html/tipsindex.html for lots of good information on all sorts of lures, tactics, rigging, etc. All slanted towards largemouth black bass but except for needing wire for pike, they should be the same for your waters. And for the wire, I really think one of the 49 strand wires would be the way to go since it would have the least effect on lure action. Newt Vail
ZiptrevThanks MALC and well done! It does get quicker and The new pics thing has helped! Adam, The place I was thinking of is the one pictured in my last long Irish report for the thursday.Thats pictured on 'Where you fished today, Part 1 page5'(have to scroll down!) Now Martin put me on to this stretch and he Pole fished the inside line for Tench! Feedered the middle for Bream. But I dont think a stick would work there as its very wide and the current is quite a bit out. If you would really like a stick day, I have been piy on to another swim, that is shallower, narrower and said to be good for 2lb Roach! I don't know it, but Dave Scouse is going today and will let me know! Talk to you about the day, closer to the time! Newt, Thanks a million, another report later today, but would what you describe work in these very shallow , weedy lakes? I've fished another today and having tremendous problems with weed and lack of depth, as I have no shallow plugs, only fairly deep divers at present. Spinning is the only way I can get through weed free! Report later, too tired now! Cya Trev ZiptrevShouldn't happen to a DOG!

MALCDate : 1/06/02 Venue : Drayton Reservoir Time : 1pm till 7pm Steve Wilson and myself tagged on the end of a club match this afternoon at Drayton which was on pegs 35 to 54. And every other peg was also in use with 4 other matches. Steve fished peg 54 and i fished 53 the plan was simple with the sun blazeing down the carp were sure to be up for the Bagging Wag and latter in the evenning they would move in close.. Did it go to plan ? NO!!! But did get a great tan. We both plugged away on the Bagging Wag till gone 5pm and not a bite between us. We then both came in close. Steve on the Waggler and me on a Pole float on Rod and Line. Steve on the Pellet over Pellet and me on the Paste over Pellet. Steve missed 3 bite's and that was the end of his day (also his first Trogg of the year). Me i missed 2 bite's but at 6.30pm managed to hit the fish below did not weigh it but recon it was about 10 or 11lb. Winning weight was 160lb+ from peg 36. With 2 more weights over the 100lb and a couple of 90lbs all between peg 35 and 44. Of the other matches the best result came from pegs 2 to 30 with 188lb winning and 126lb needed for 7th place so JLW you should be in for a good time on your match on the 19th. ZiptrevTypical bloody Carp Angler ! No Smile LOL, Nice 1 MALC (Remind me to pack extra sandwiches at the next fish-in.) I wasnt sure at first, whether it was a report, or an OXFAM Appeal lol, but that's some peggy old water! 160lbs to zilch! NewtTrev - RE: using a C-rig (carolina-rig) in weedy water. Nope. Very much an open water rig. However, a normal soft-plastic rig with a bullet weight pegged down firm to a bead protecting the hook knot might just to the trick. And downsize the lure if the bite is slow and cautious. Or try the johnson spoon I mentioned with a small bit of soft trailer in some color that would be usual for small bait fish in the particular water. Worked very slowly and allowed to sink into any holes/pockets in the weed can often produce some very exciting fishing. Newt Vail
peterSunday June 2nd. Rayne Lodge,Essex. Having fished this venue twice before in attrocious conditions,i was hoping for third time lucky. The weather was certainly better in fact it was scorching. There are 28 pegs on the lake ,and i drew peg 16 and on reaching it was delighted to see that i could reach the island at 13mtrs and i also had plenty of cover provided by bushes and weed beds in both margins. The going method in recent weeks has been expander pellet and this was to be the main line of attack, with corn and maggot as a back up. Trouble was that the hot weather had woken up the carp to spawn, and that appeared to be the only thing on their minds at my end of the lake. The whole day was spent watching fish after fish thrashing the water to foam as they charged through the weed beds in the margins. All i could manage to whittle out were a few small tench and crucians for a rather dissapointing 11lbs 4ozs,only good enough for 10th on the day. As a footnote.if you read the match report you will know that Mike Davis lost a large carp transfering it to his keepnet, but here is a smaller one that he managed to keep. The photo doesn't really manage to do the colours justice i'm afraid. Peter. Make Friends,Go Maggotdrowning. Edited by - peter on 06 June 2002 6:19:29 PM
MALCDate :2/06/02 Venue :Packington Somers (Little Geary's) Time :9am till 3pm Well if you've read the Match report you'll see that Dirk won and took the £1 side bet once again. All i can say about my match is that i fished like a prat for 3lb 9oz and 17th out of 21 fishing. Unluckly for the B section i was picked to fish for them as they were 1 person short and Steve fished as individual (bad choice) as he came 4th with 15lb 6oz. Not a very good result. beebsI asked if anybody had heard of Shawfields lakes in Hampshire the other day and it seems it is quite unheard of. It was featured in the Angling times a week or so ago and is about 5 minutes from my girlfriends flat in Aldershot. My first fishing session for 12 years resulted in a tiny perch (surprise, surprise) and quite symbolic as it was the first fish I ever caught when I first started fishing. Foat fishing double maggot on the bottom on 4lb line to size 16 hook (a bit heavy, but I had no idea what I may be hooking into and there were some big carp rolling in the shallows about 15 feet away). A lot more missed strikes and some more small perch later I started missing a whole load more bites. The fish were biting every cast but I wasn't hooking anything so I dropped to a size 18 to 1.7lb hook length. That was it, bang, bang, bang - Crucians and loads of them. Right next to a small patch of lillies. I hit into one after another. I've never caught a crucian before but my god they fight well. Very impressed. About 15 or 20 of them later I went home tired and happy. My first foray back into angling a resounding success. I had a bath, started watcing the footie and fell asleep before 7 o'clock, woke up at 8 this morning. This sitting around lark really takes it out of you!!!
MALCPeter, Not the first time and wont be the last time, but this one felt bad as it was my own fault for going with the totaly wrong bait and getting well battered either side with 13lb+ to my right and 14lb+ to my left. But there's always next weekend. Beebs, Nice report on your return to the sport hope you carry on enjoying it. And yes Crucian's are a lovely fish a fight great for their size. Ziptrev As I drove up the M1 after dropping Daz off, I reflected on how glad I was that I had a witness to today’s events, otherwise I would soon start to be accused of making these stories up! The day had started for us, fine and bright and I arrived with Daz at 4.00 am, as he had kindly agreed to introduce me to a Canal stretch that we both hold club members for. I was looking forward to this, as I have never fished a Canal before and according to the clubs website, we were going to be in a prolific area, containing, not least, Carp to 20lbs! Two more junctions of the Motorway and we quickly arrived and choose the pegs, just downstream from the lock. Here’s the swim I fished. Daz had suggested that we feed 3 lines. The far bank, loose fed meat, sweetcorn and pellet. Mid way, groundbait mix Near bank, chopped worm. Fish were topping everywhere and the day was beautiful and sunny. It looked as though we were in for a really good time. Here’s Daz in the swim to my left. And to the right, you can see the Railway Bridge. Well, I’m sure you agree the setting ideal, but the fishing? For some reason they did not want to know, despite much ‘surface dimpling’ activity. Large fish (believed Carp) made huge swirls closer to the lock and Daz made up a float rod and controller float and tried bread feeding on the surface. I caught a perch on the inside line after about ½ an hour, so small, not even the famous stripes had had time to develop. An hour later, a Gudgeon of a similar size fell to a caster! (With 2 days Bank Holiday for the jubilee, neither Daz nor I had fresh maggots and most were turned from Semer! At 10.00, we decided that enough was enough and we were both A) Keen to investigate club waters that neither of us had visited, and B) b) To catch some Fish! Daz hadn’t seen Highbridge, where I fished last week, so I took him there The waters looked still, lifeless and scum-covered and with only 2 other Anglers there, (neither catching, we decided to go and look at an adjacent Trent stretch, to assess it for the future. Finding it easily, we walked the 25-peg section of the smooth, inviting river and both wished that it were June 16th! For those who state the river is dead, they should have seen the activity in here! We then decided that we needed a river and went in search of the Dove. Here we could research for the coarse prospects for the coming season, but more importantly now, could fish the worm for the brown trout that the river holds. Not clearly sign posted, we eventually came to the required track and made our way across 2 fields until we came to the Dove. A beautiful clear, clean river, we were very impressed with the potential of the gravelly runs and deeper glides, if not the access and very long trek across two fields to the banks! When we had finished our Trent Bank walk, I had removed my waterproof trousers and was now wearing just a jacket, as the day was so fine. Choosing a swim apiece, we set up quiver rods and began rolling the worms through the water. This is the 1st swim we choose It wasn’t until the second however, that Daz struck into his 1st Dive trout and was pleased to see just how clean and healthy it appeared. These trout are not stockies, but true natural wild Browns! Then, it started! Out of nowhere the skies darkened and a drizzle started, followed by heavy rain. In seconds my trousers and shoes were saturated and Daz was only marginally better off, by having the over trousers but no waterproof shoes. A mile from the car nearly and wet through already, we decided to keep walking and fishing as best we could. Daz tried a corner swim, whilst I tried unsuccessfully to roll a cigarette under a tree! (I hate it when I ruin a packet of papers with wet hands) Daz then had a bite that on 6lb bottom was unstoppable and broke him off! We suspected Barbel or Pike and moved further downstream in search of the Trout It was then that we discovered this sad sight! Daz rolled the body onto the shore with his landing net in order that we could find out a reason for this death! The body had no external marks and we can only assume a death from heart attack? Old age? Other natural cause? Certainly we hoped that no disease would appear amongst these beautiful fish, as this Barbel must have weighed over 8lbs So, depressed by the sight of such a lovely creature, stricken for no apparent reason, and now thoroughly fed up with the continual downpour, we decided to call it a day. We had followed the river in a semi-circle since first reaching the banks and were unsure of the exact location of the gate to the car, but knew it lay roughly in the direction of a field of cows, so head off this way. Discussing plans to fish these new found river stretches, (for both of us Rivers are 1st choice fishing) I suddenly heard Daz say ‘That cows a Bull!’ Looking up, I saw in the distance a mass of 40 to 50 beasts, all to far away for me to see accurately. ‘Nah’ I scoffed, hoping Daz wasn’t one f those people frightened by animals! ‘Oh yes' said Daz, rather more loudly ‘They’re ALL Bloody bulls’! Looking hurriedly again, I perceived that he was right and that more importantly they had all started running towards us! At great Pace With Great Big Horns And we were stuck out in the middle of a field! ‘Fence there ‘cried Daz and needing no urging (Zippys can move fast in Coward mood) I went into Mach3 and hurled myself and my kit over a 2 barred fence into the next field only to discover that more Bulls at the top, cut off our escape route! In hindsight, we concurred that the bulls (or Bullocks) mistook us for the person that feeds them, as shortly afterwards they disappeared en-masse over the brow of the hill and we made good our escape! Young, but fully-grown, the sight of a charging herd of these creatures in full flight is definitely bowel weakening! There is no picture to accompany this, as I admit, the last thing on my mind at that moment was the Camera! Finally we made the car, heaved a sigh of relief that the ground hadn’t got too boggy for it, with the downpour and drove away. On the way home, I showed Daz two more Derwent Car parks and dropped him off at 6.00. Despite all, we had had an interesting day, with good crack and plans for the future. Put it down to a preparation day, but please! No More Bulls! Cheers Trev PS Daz just said that! Trev ZiptrevShouldn't happen to a DOG! Edited by - Ziptrev on 06 June 2002 1:26:43 PM

NewtGeoff - if you can get Trev into the boat it should be safe. The curse seems to need land to function. If not, just heave him overboard since he swears he is a wonderful swimmer. I checked before the first outing of his visit here and he assured me if I would slow the boat to less than 10mph it would be fine to toss him in if need be. Trev - "scum on water" = Try the Buzz Bait. If that does not produce, try the Johnson spoon both with and without a trailer (piece of soft plastic like a short worm or piece of pork skin if you have them available as a lure trailer. If those all fail, go elsewhere 'cause the fish just ain't having it. Newt Vail
MALCTrev, Great read and i know what you mean about a field of Bullocks they scare the pants of me. But i bet it was fun to see. Today i guested on Rugby Disabled's match at Stockton Reservoir and i drew peg 53 on the straight . I set up 1 pole rig to cover near side swims against the reeds to the left at 3mtr and to the right at 5mtr as they were both the same depth. The rig was a simple Tyson float taking 1x10 to cock and was rigged on 16 lacy to 0.14 line direct to a size 12 Mustard method hook. Also set up a frame feeder on 5lb mainline to a 6" hooklength of 4lb to a size 12 Animal hook with a hair, this was to fish to the island that was about 35 to 40 yds out. At the start cupped in a mix of meat and pellets to both left and right pole swims, then cast the feeder to the island with meat on the hair and sat biteless for the first 1½hrs. All the while trickling feed into the near line's. After 1½hr had first bite on the feeder and missed it, next cast resulted in a carp about 3lb. Then after another ½hr after seeing movement in the near left hand reeds dropped in with paste and took a carp about the same size. No more bites on the pole in the next ½hr so back on the feeder which resulted in 1 more carp and a chub. Finale tally 3 Carp and 1 Chub for 16lb 15oz and a win. Nearly forgot to mention that Dirk was also fishing and he only managed 5lb+ BY THE WAY DIRK THANKYOU FOR THE ABOVE Your on a downwards slope now LOL Malc Fish with Friends @ MaggotDrowning.com

ZiptrevGrimleys June 7th, Is it really 17 days to mid-summer day? The streets of Chesterfield were a riot of colour, footballs, inebriated wannabe footballers and bathed in sunshine as I drove to the local tackle shop at 3.45pm. England had just beaten Argentina in stage 1 of the World Cup, the weather had turned and I was going to seek yet another new lake! How perfect could life get? Stupid question really, hindsight leads me to suppose; a lot more as it turned out! My visit to the Tackle shop was, not for today’s trip, but for maggot and Pinky for my PAD match tomorrow, for worm to attack the ‘Bull’ swim (as we forever would now know it!) with Daz on Sunday ands of course for anything that caught my eye in that Aladdin’s cave of a shop! Bait sorted, lighter by £16+ (well there was an attractive plug, close to firetiger at £2.99, a ready made trace that looked good etc,) I headed down the M1 and arrived at Grimleys pond at around 5.00 pm. I had promised Newt a few sessions experimenting with my new varieties of lures, so resolved to compare dead-bait and lure fishing on this 1st, relatively short (for me) visit to the pond, which held Pike to lb20 according to my Pride Ticket. Arriving after finally braving the ‘Private Road’ sign, that deters lesser mortals! I discovered I was correct and found the lockable Pride Fishing Car Park. There are 2 Ponds here; one quite small and this one was in the process of being scraped out by a large excavator! Consequently, I had to skirt it to reach the main 1 and ¼ acre Pond, with much sliding on wet mud and the occasional mutter! (Well mutter is better than swearword!) I walked around the edge of the larger lake and like most I suppose, fancied the furthest away swim! I quickly set up my dead bait rod, baited with a sardine, fed in a long, long deceased and multiple thawed and refrozen roach, chopped into small pieces and certainly past it’s ‘Best Before’ date! Then I set up the Spinning rod, chose my new plug and sighed contentedly as I made the 1st cast! So, it started to rain! Now I swear the sky was clear when I arrived! The day had been fine 25 miles as the crow flies to the North! But, I had again, despite all my avowals on our soaking wet day with the Bulls! A) Left as perfectly good pair of Wellingtons in the car B) Left waterproof over trousers with them! All that was immaterial, as the heavens opened and within the time it would have taken me to get halfway back, I was as thoroughly soaked through as I was on our expedition 2 days previously! Sighing, I did my all to familiar now adjustments! Camera in inside pocket! Tobacco, Papers and Glasses tucked under Xmas jumper in shirt pocket! Mobile, wrapped in Plastic bag in Velcro fastened side pocket! By now it was approaching 7.00 pm and so I gritted my teeth, moved 1 peg up from my dead bait and started Spinning Here’s my earlier view before the rain came! I think you will agree this is another attractive natural water! Tench, Oh alright Tinca you Poser Alan!) To 8lb? And Bream to 7, again according to the website! http://www.prideofderby.co.uk/ Here is a view of the adjacent swim, where I was spinning. I changed to a bigger, different style plug and made a few casts, with no takes. Idly, I pondered on the action that this, (a Bass-pro cheapie) was performing in the water and with about a foot of line from the rod tip, pulled it through the water at my feet to watch the motion. I nearly had a heart attack, when a vicious swirl, broke out of the water at my feet, grabbed my lure and made off at Mach2 (which slowed down by water is damned quick! After playing this one carefully, in the pouring rain, I was happy to land what I felt was a good double. Realising that I had brought, Landing net, scales and change plugs, but forgotten forceps, I hastily made my way the 12 or so yards to the next peg and collected the missing forceps! On returning, I then went back again, as the Pike had by this time, decided to thrash about and embed the treble of the plug into the landing net! And I now needed scissors! Returning with the scissors, I reached for my glasses, in shirt pocket, secure under Xmas Jumper, to discover only tobacco and papers! The damn Glasses had gone again. No time to look, no finesse now! The Pike was the important one, so I butchered my £19.99 landing net, weighed her (She had the cheek to go just 9lb 6oz) and returned her I then said a few choice words to the weathermen, the friends (who needs enemies) in the forum that had labelled me ‘Rain Man’ and also to the Universe in general. Back to the dead bait swim and a cup of coffee, to find that after trip for forceps and return for scissors, I had left the bag open and a 1/2 “ of rainwater was swilling about in my bag! I could get no wetter if I waded in the water, so I returned to my spinning rod and tried again. After a few casts, the choice was to try a fresh lure, or move 1 more peg! Sorry Newt, the move won, after all this one had caught! And I was in no mode to experiment in the rain. 10 minutes later, I was glad of my decision, as a perfect take, way out in the lake gave me an enjoyable fight from a fish that weighed just 5lb 8ozs Sorry if these Pike pictures are repetitive and I intend to post better, but cannot risk the camera for ‘specials’ in a downpour! Well, I had an hour or so left, so I returned to check the deadbait, despite the buzzer remaining stubbornly quiet and recast after ascertaining the bait appeared OK! Now, I did experiment! Tried a spoon, another plug, (very weedy swims again! Cant wait for the shallow divers!) Tried a Mepps type spinner and also an American version. No softs or jigheads today, but they will follow! With the time now 9.00, I decided to pack away my kit and spin my way back to the car. Now the rain had brought out millions of these fellows! If only the river season was open, I would have collected the slugs for chub bait, but 1 slug in particular caught my eye, as he seemed to be suspended above the grass, as I made my way back to my kit! He was suspended! He was on the lens of my glasses, buried in the Grass! The capricious Gods of the Zippy fishing sagas must have been falling about laughing!!! Gratefully, I reclaimed my glasses yet again, tucked them securely away with the camera and made my way back to the car, spinning wherever possible until the lake end was reached. Then a horrendous skirt of the mud banked smaller pond, leaving the now quagmire where impassable for the comparative ease of 4 foot high saturated grass, until thankfully the car park came in sight! Soaking, but sweating with the effort too, I unlocked the Car Park and set off on my 30-minute return journey. Phoning Elaine, I requested that she run a hot bath, slip over the road and order a Guinness, as I should be able to join her 5 minutes before closing time! AND so it proved! As I peered through the spray lashed windscreen (Spray yes! It stopped raining the minute I left the Lake!) trying to make good time, I asked myself ‘Is it worth it!’ AND answered ‘Nearly 15lb of Prime Pike in 4 hours and a match tomorrow, requiring a 6.30 start’ HELL yes, I’ll be there! Tight Lines Trev PS Newt, Lures 2 Deadbait 0 !!! PS Sorry, I just have to add this! For the 3rd time in just a few days, I have seen a Kingfisher and am so pleased that these gorgeous birds seem to be making a return in this wonderful River convergance area. Adam, Great Post and it is so easy to forget what you know! I forget how to safely keep my damn glasses! so I'm lost with anything more technical Trev ZiptrevShouldn't happen to a DOG! Adam SHello everyone trev great report as ever , but one thing , if a herd of cows or bullocks ever runs at you again and your stuck in a field with nowhere to go just run right at them and shout (and hit em with your landing net if needed ) it really works and they usually leggit , especially if you shout die hamburgers or something. i had to do this a few times while fishing the river liffey, but im still not accepting any responsibilty if any mds get stampeded following my advice. anyway Venue:liffey resevoir,co.kildare, ireland. dates:2nd of june time:5pm till 10 pm. baits:maggots and corn over hemp and groundbait method:waggler, feeder and pole. This was an odd day , but a day when i learned a lot about his venue. i began fishing off an old pier into 14 feet of water fishing pole to hand, but the flow caused by the river liffey entering the resevoir a hundred metres to my right was just to heavy at 10 metres to fish and feed accuratley, and all i could catch on the pole was small trout. then i tried the feeder, 70 mins and three lost feeders in snags later and i changed to a big loafer stick float fished only four feet from the pier , right below where i was sitting just a rod lenght out where there was a nice back eddy . this meant i could bait much more easily and fish effectively. in two hours on the stick float i had two perch, one roach and two hybrids both nearly 3lbs (which is a good result on the resevoir here) the level had dropped three feet since my arrival, exposing a big sunken wall to my right (a relic from the time when before the valley was flooded to make the resevoir) which i was able to explore. standing on the wall you are in one foot of water , take one step further out and you drop down into 14 feet. this also explained the heavy water flowing at 10 metres where the river bounces of the wall and is channeled by it and picks up speed . but this is what creates the lovely back eddy at the pier. i plan to prebait the eddy for a couple of days and fish it again in july. Venue:royal canal ,co.kildare, ireland. dates:6th and 7th of may time:7pm till 1am both days. baits:maggots and corn over hemp, grounbait and casters method:waggler and pole. i haven`t had a chance to fish the canal since the 24 of may or thereabouts , but by all accounts it had been fishing terribly with just a few small perch and roach showing, and the temps being way down on what they were this time last year. i had prebaited my chosen peg for 6 days (every second day)but i hadnt raked it and despite the poor fishing recently i was optimistic. This stretch of canal had been stocked with some big bream prior to a match on the 25 and 26th of may , and while walking to my swim on thursday (6th june) i spotted one of them. It was a very sunny and bright day and he was cruising just subsurface , he was huge , he looked all of 9lbs (which is big considering the irish record is only about 11lbs and the biggest bream i have had in 17years of fishing this canal is only 6lbs) i followed him for a few pegs until he reached a peg where some younsters were fishing , he saw their lines in the water and turned sharply and dropped down in the water. i put some hemp and groundbait into the kids swim , but they had no luck in tempting the bream. when i arrived at my swim i balled in some groundbait on my far line with hemp and casters over the top and fsihed treble caster on the hook. on my near line i feed small balls of cloudy groundbait and srpayed maggots and hemp very close to the reeds, then i put out two identical waggler rigs (my usual canal rigs) and settled down to wait for some action. two hours later i was still waiting as the sun went down , and even in the twilight and after dark fishing with starlights the fishing was slow. i fished until about 1am and ended up with about 13lbs made up of ten or so perch, three roach, one eel and six bream to 3lbs, but no tench. something about the canal just didnt seem right , as you can nearly always pick up a few tench after prebaiting. i decided to return on the morning of the 7th to rake and put some bait down and fish again in the evening. a 5lbs tench from the canal in 1999, why cant i catch em now? The next day i raked both my near and far lines at about 1pm and put in a small amount of groundbait (about 7 balls) and some corn, hemp and maggotts. When i returned at 7pm that evening to fish it was clear it had made some difference, lots of fish topping and a nice colour in the swim. First cast i had a 3lbs tench on corn which charged through both swims and disturbed things for a while. for 40 mins or so all i got was a few perch but then i got another tench , then nothing for a while , then another tench ... and so on. after dark the bream switched on for a while and i managed a few. i can only attribute the improvement in fortunes to the raking as everything else was the same , rigs ,bait, water temperature and wind direction. i packed up at 1am with 5 tench to 4lbs 4oz,6 bream to 3.5lbs plus small roach, perch and hybrids (oh and the manditory eel) for about 30-35lbs.treble what i had the day before. the bag even included a small tench foulhooked in midwater on a light pole rig (1lbs hooklenght size 22 hook) while fishing tight to the rushes for perch. so the raking proved to be a lesson re-learned , as i did it all the time in previous months and years , but this time i just forgot.i wont forget its effectiveness for tench again in a hurry. ill put some pics up in a week or so when i get them developed. OH , one last thing , sadly the little white duck seems to have gone to the canal in the sky, as he is no longer with his mother or siblings, i guess he was just too easy a target for a hawk or a mink to pass up. bless him. Good luck all ADAM http://communities.msn.com/ADAMSALBUM79

Adam SHello well done on the pike trev, lure fishing really gets the heart going when a big pike whallops the plug doesnt it , the 9 pounder must have been a good scrap. newt- you are probably right , most likely theres a nice plump pike sitting somewhere cleaning feathers from its teeth. but i just cant bring myself to use duck livebaits , maybe a spot of fly fishing might get him though. ZiptrevToday was a PAD match at Swannington, Near Coalville! It is a typical carp puddle with around 20 pegs, good access and concrete platforms. It holds the usual Carp etc. and is really quite an unremarkable little water! The rudd in here vary from around 1lb (if you are lucky, to the tiniest fish I have hooked since returning to fishing! Small Perch were the other species I caught Here's the start of the match, I was drawn on Peg 10, 11 was vacant and Mark Alderson drew 12 and came 3rd with 5lb 2 oz This is my corner swim I always enjoy fishing, but would prefer something more natural in lakes. Or a river! Cheers Trev PS I dressed up in my Wellington boots and overtrousers today as the forecast was for 30% rain . Sweated cobs and it stayed dry all day! doh! ZiptrevShouldn't happen to a DOG! DaveHi everyone, Stu and I had a trip planned today to see Stan at Elvington Lake regarding the Northern Fish-in so we decided to mix business with pleasure. A quick phone call later and Stan had reserved us two pegs. So off we went, loaded to the hilt with every conceivable piece of tackle you could think of, a mix of baits and our waterproofs, Anyway we got there shortly after 8.15am and soon settled down, the quarry - Carp. Once tackled up, casts made, buzzers set, it gave us the opportunity to have a natter without having to watch our floats or tips Soon after ten Stu had landed a nice mirror caught on BioPlex boilies, around five/six ounce, whoops pounds, lol. Everything was quiet in my swim so one rod in, one pole out and fishing with a dibber, two foot under the surface against a bed of lillies I soon started banging out Rudd, Roach and Perch, all on single yellow maggot. 26 in total and then the rain came, and came, and came, gawd did I mention that it rained? The rain was forcast and was due from over the pennines around 1.00pm. (Dave P - Thanks ) It was bang on time. The pole went dead which wasn't suprising with the rain lashing the surface so I swapped it back to the rod. One rod was set up with BioPlex (thanks Stu ) the other with one full and two half dendrobenas worms, both with a bomb cast out to the middle. The worms did the trick and the buzzer screamed as the line was torn from the reel, these Northern, Yorkshire, Carp don't mess about tha nos. After a steady battle, this nice Ghost Carp came in, a new PB ghostie for me - Shortly after the worms again grabbed another fish, this time a tench around a pound. The rain kept pounding down but strangely every time the rain stopped an angler a couple of pegs away caught a carp, and another, and another, in fact he just kept catching - 11 in all between approx 8-15lb. Here are two of them - His bait - now that would be telling, lol Dave
ZiptrevNice one Dave and I'm pleased I got no blame over the RAIN this time. LOL, (Seem to be getting a lot from everywhere else If its fishing this well now, roll on July! Did you use Boilies? Nah! dont think it was, you never mentioned catching Pike! My series of disasters continues and I'll post tomorrow! Newt! Yeah, I think you are right and I'm just optomistic! I shall be just as twitchy next time! (please for a next time!) Cheers Trev PS love the 'old friend' HHHHMMMM! Dai FishSat 8/6/02 Seven Oaks Pontyclun I fished from 10am to 9.15pm the methods today were cage feeder with hair rigged Bacon grill and Waggler with sweetcorn on the hook set 12inches deep fished close in, I had a very slow start and the concentration only broken by a visit from Ray Owen and his wife who called in to say hello. By late afternoon I had only had 2 fish a Mirror weighing just over 8lb caught on the waggler and corn, and a common of 5.5lb caught on the feeder with Bacon grill, I had tried everything I could think of in all that time but could not get anymore bites for love nor money, nobody else on the lake was catching either which made me feel a little better, but I was surprised at how slow it was as when I visited the lake on monday the carp were all up the banks (just about) spawning and had been for a couple of days, so I expected them to be hungry but thay did not ant to know, until that is late afternoon then all hell broke out all over the place, I don't know how many fish I ended up with (I forgot my notebook) or what weight I finished with but I do know that when Ann (my wife)picked me up at 9.15pm my arms were hurting. One of the highlites of my day was late in the evening a guy came and fished two pegs away from me and started fishing with bread on the surface, a method I have herd and read much about but never tried so I watched him for a short while and witnessed him catch two carp the biggest being just shy of ten pounds, I then felt that I had to try this way of fishing, WOW what fun I had a couple of carp of around 5-6lb and missed many more and lost on big fish after a long hard fight I had him to the net once but as soon as he saw it he took off again and that was that so to speak, I now can not wait to try this again.
